Wow, seeing that perspective I can understand why he got a little irritated, that’s almost exactly the same thing that happened to me and Drew in practice
In this instance Morgan was overtaking the race leader on her heelside. The leader could not see the pass coming. The lead person will always take the prefered line. It is up to the person making the pass to make the pass clean. If this was a judgment or penalty call, it is almost always made on the overtaker.
Racing is tough people make mistakes. Glad he was able to fight back and make the transfer. Too bad for Katch. Was good to see her leading the Pro division 2nd Heat. Thats racin
Yeah its a tough situation, it happened so fast, it’s easy to get squeezed out if the leader makes an unexpected or wider-than-expected turn.
Good on both of them for finishing, his fight back up to the top was impressive
Great footage! Love to watch everything And especially the foot race, didnt know anyone was recording, so cool
Would love to hear @Mbrady take on the crash when he sees it from this angle. I feel like this spot was super tricky especially riding opposite to each other (we actually have a similar one in our go kart track and incidents like this happen there even in karts :-D).
I almost crashed there in free practice with someone in very similar situation and then I realized you ideally need to have much better acceleration right from the start to be sure you can fit in before the turn starts happening or make sure they see you (Mario overtook Vasek in Pro finals there but had both of it I think, they were going same side and Mario was able to accelerate much faster - and still it looked tight)
So really curious if Morgan would do this again or rather back up and wait if it was possible. It was super unfortunate, especially given up until that point I believe he was safe because he already had a win from the first heat. I have to say for example I only realized the Finals grid will be based on qualification after the heats I wonder whether it was just me.
This little weave finished it, but given the lines there was no chance two skates would fit anyway, not a pleasant feeling for sure
Yeah, I thought at the beginning that chicane doesn’t slow traffic much just narrows it.
and also definitely illustrates the visibility problem we have on skateboards. we’re facing one side and the other we’re not.
My biggest regret and sad moment from the whole event.
I most certainly would not have gone for the same gap if I could do it again. I thought I could squeeze through in time, but she came over slightly quicker than I thought and it was just all over.
It was in hindsight a stupid overtake, as I had only that overtake left for the reverse grid race, and it was the first lap. I had plenty of time but I went for a lower % move that was way too high risk. Nearly cost me making the finals, did cost Dina making finals (I think) and left both of us hurting after that crash.
Big lessons to take forward. Patience would have been key.
As for the track layout, I think it would have been better with no chicane at all possibly. It was one of the better overtaking spots (the straight) but the chicane made any of those moves on a similar paced rider quite high risk. Most other spots to overtake on the track required having a fairly significant pace advantage, or for the other rider to make a slight mistake.
All in all tho, my favorite track I’ve ever ridden I think. Still room for improvement tho. We are all still learning much.
Thanks for this video. Man that’s hard to watch. Ugh the eternity it took for my remote to re-connect - I thought in that moment I was for sure out of the finals
I see what you mean with the overtake before the chicane. Its true there was a chance to take more inside line like you did and if that line would somehow follow through so you could make use of the line it could be good.
That said I would definitely NOT keep the straight completely. I think the chicane did exactly what I expected it to do - not being able to hit the proclaimed 45mph speeds. That straight is just too long if its meant to be short track and basically with a board under 40mph would be impossible to survive and keep anyone behind. It would benefit a faster board too heavily in my opinion.
I remember last year the chicane was even more prominent and I felt if you could stay on the inside line it kinda forced the person on the outside to turn more in and therefore compromised their exit, so you could technically prepare a better overtake line for the next corner after the straight. This year it was possible to keep much of the speed so the only function was really preventing the top speed.
I was thinking about the zig-zag sections which were definitely challenging and fun, but sometimes also neutralized any line change you prepared. So maybe changing at least some of the sections to be able to capitalize on that line might be good. But not sure about this one.
But what was absolutely awesome I think was the first corner. That was simply genius. Combined with the curved straight (if I dont count the troubles on the start :-D) where you couldnt just hit the throttle but needed to prepare the line and the sharp back turn. It really made it soo easy to take a non-ideal line, overshoot the corner or just do a mistake and lot of races were made or taken away at that spot.
All and all I think it was a nice mix of speedy and turny sections which could be tuned to fix the problematic spots and introduce a more possiblity for choosing line there and there.
Yeah… that first corner was truly the key corner of the track. So many mistakes were made there, just waiting to be taken advantage from. So fun to both watch and ride.
I think a shorter, single segment straight - that went back into a slower corner section - would have been the best for racing.
A few more longer corners as well. The corners were mostly short bumps, a few more long sweeping turns that cover more significant distance would be a cool change for next year.
I wonder how much line choices were neutralized by the track simply being too slippery. Especially in those longer corners my rear end was just constantly off. Couldnt really do much there other than to shorter the distance.
It got me . I had trouble finding my line on that corner for some reason. Kept taking a wide late apex.
The fastest line through turn 1 was for sure a late turn in and late apex. Like significantly faster. Just gotta nail your entry speed and braking accurately to not be vulnerable to overtake on the inside.
It’s the line I took in turn 1 of the finals that gave me the best exit and allowed for the overtake for the lead.
I hope we will see that in the data. Need to be a bit annoying until I get to it
Guilty as charged.
Hey that’s my line.
or… i think it is. until i give data to @davidpilny and he tells me it’s not.
Given the amount of traffic i found myself in the best line with someone behind was certainly not going wide. I had to defend the inside by being close. It meant a late brake then slow corner speed with a tight turn, then punch out.
The benefit of being way out in front enables the best line to be taken obviously so kudos to you!
or way behind.
This is something that worked for me too in my second heat until the crash lol
Let’s not talk about the second heat haha
