ESK8CON 2024 - Vegas April 5th-7th

Yeah I haven’t been able to get any board time in the last month or so also, I’m going to try and just shoot for advanced class hopefully. I’ll be able to get some practice in this week though so that will be cool.

ok that would be reasonable. Last year 36 was a max speed in pro on the back straight and this year layout looks pretty similar. Ron was telling me someone in sd was able to hit 45 but I just cant see how that could be possible otherwise than wrongly setup layout. With the lenghts given, if the slowdown chicane works it just doesnt seem possible to go that fast.

Would still be curious if anyone measured on precise gps because those vesc speeds are often a bit off.

This is last year Mario with my Racebox. It is from practice but the lap time kinda fits the pace of the finals from what I checked.

I can confer this, @HAIRYMANJACK is who is hitting those speeds on the straight.

@HAIRYMANJACK is who organized setting up the layout of the track. He overlaid the released track over satellite image, then we used the painted parking lot lines as reference markers to lay out the track.

There’s some things about the published track layout that don’t seem right(ex, being <6ft wide in a few sections), so I’ll be supprised if the track they set is identical to what they published. My money is on a more aggressive back chicane, and (begrudgingly) slightly less aggressive intestines

Disappointing, for real. I loved the intense one we had lmao

I wasn’t sure if he wanted people knowing his top speed on the track

This should be an interesting poll about the con…

As long as it’s actually a secret.

Agree. At least when it’s released it’s fair game for everyone.

Personally I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to practice sections of the track

I initially voted 'yes’to it being a secret, but the more i thought about the growth of the sport the more i realised that all tracks should be released as it gives the riders the information required to prepare their boards and themselves for the race ahead. I know in my situation, travelling 30+ hours to compete, having the information beforehand is crucial

It’s a super interesting question I thought to throw out to the community. Especially in regards to esk8con as it’s probably the most approachable and accessible esk8 race for the widest range of skill levels.

What I’ve seen thus far from the poles it seems is those that can set it up are favoring to release it.

Those that can’t because of space, climate etc are favoring keeping it a secret.

i agree 100% with that take

Yay digital storage?

Background: surprisingly, there is a serious lack of straightforward DIY / open-source file sharing server applications out there. I’ll spare you the details, but there was nothing decent that wasn’t overkill that could act as a shared file dump that could authenticate using a Google account or an Apple ID or facebook or whatever (well there was, but they were stupidly complex and cost $$$$$).

But I found something that ticked almost all the boxes with the notable exception of single sign on accounts, ie, you can’t use your Google / Apple / Facebook ID to log in. Because I’m not going to write a frontend for you all to self-service create user accounts for yourselves (I’d probably get it done just in time for esk8con to be over) and I doubt the alternative of everyone asking for logins individually would work (no one would bother)… we all have to share a login. Fun times.

There’s a main “Common Files” root folder. You can create as many subfolders within that as you want (I highly suggest you do that to keep your stuff separated / organized), and you basically have unlimited space. I mean if you hit more than a couple petabytes I may have to quash that, but otherwise it’s there for the dumping.

Bonus: there’s a free iOS and Android app to make it far easier to upload or download stuff from mobiles. Streaming video directly from it is ok, but it’s similar to Google Drive in that it’s not optimized for that kind of application and will probably buffer a bit. Uploading and downloading should be very speedy, though on the off chance it’s choking on bandwidth, I can move it over to a fatter 25 gigabit/sec link.

Oh and you make files and folders public (right clicking works in the web interface); this will generate a link that you can share out to anyone with that link so they doesn’t need a login to read and access those files. You can also revoke the link, put passwords on it, or turn things off from being public any time after.

Feel free to test it out. There’s a 22 megapixel image and a 4k video file in there already for testing purposes. I’ll probably turn the whole thing read-only a bit after esk8con for sanity’s sake.

Here’s a photo of Barbie on a firepit about to get run over.

Anyone know what helmet protocol is for spectators (aka people not racing) but wanting to try out various boards from vendors and such? Will there be loaners there or do you need to bring your own? I’m assuming they’re required to ride on the track. Might throw a half helmet in my carry-on but just figured I’d ask.

I don’t know what the event protocol will be, but at least here at Hoyt/Metroboard we always require a helmet for any demo rides. So if you want to try our new boards, bring a helmet or be prepared to wear one of our sweaty loaner helmets

I imagine that will be the same for most other esk8 brands.
