DIY hurricane/ evolve runflat inserts

for anyone bored of being stranded/ fixing punctures…

Worked better than expected. Squish equivalent to around 35psi. Much flatter profile means larger contact patch and better grip (in theory). Feels almost exactly the same as tubes with no loss of range. i was expecting some loss of range/ tyre roll while carving hard or vibration but its spot on.
If you’re heavier/ like to pump upto 50psi of course then you will lose some range.
1x 20"x1.75 JUST exactly does 4 tyres. 26" insert would give some room for error.
Didn’t actually need to trim them down. can JUST get them in without trimming and this would then be slightly rounder profile and firmer.
the ‘stop-a-flat’ are nice dense inserts
Should work on other tyres such as evolve 6" or 6" Electric Skateboard Tyre Full Set of 4 150x50mm – Eskate.shop
I cut 1 end of each insert at an angle so that there was no dead spot on the outside surface. The photo of it inside the tyre shows a gap on the inside. test fit and if it feels softer at the join a small triangle piece can be added.

Good science bro!

Let us know how the balancing goes.

Very interested as well!

I’d love some comparisons between these and just thane when it comes to range. Part of why I am hesitant to go to tires is because of all the debris and glass everywhere near me. To the point where I have to yank it out of my thane way too often. I don’t want to have to carry around stuff if I get a flat

balancing is fine, I have some sticky weights but didnt need them, certainly no worse than having a metal valve on one side of the wheel.

tyres are always going to be worse range than urethane,
the exway hydro look like a great midway point for more grip and less sketchy in the wet https://www.exwayboard.com/collections/all-accessories-of-the-atlas-series/products/exway-hydro-all-season-tires?spm=..collection_ba37c363-8cfa-41f7-bc1e-4c67b1247235.collection_1.4&spm_prev=..product_ef2dd552-e856-40f6-b8f5-ebd0a4dfd3cb.header_1.1
probably a bit better on range / bit less comfortable than the onsra rubber wheels 115mm Rubber Wheels – rideonsra
I have these and they’re good but wear fast and not as grippy as pneumatics in the wet.

I started manufacturing my own ESK8 Tire Inserts for my Atlas Carbon nearly a year ago. Just found this ESK8.news site and thread. Thought I should let u all know here…

Btw Jonny, your exway link goes to “page not found” so plz update :))

Why is this site so caveman prehistoric to the point where it won’t let me post basic links and media? Direct quote of error…

“Multiple errors occurred: 1) Sorry, you can’t embed media items in a post. 2) Sorry, you can’t include links in your posts.”

Welcome to the community! There’s a message in your inbox with some bot chores, once you’re done those you’ll have full posting access.

Custom wheels/tires are awesome, I think that might even deserve it’s own thread.

Hi Matt. Thx 4 the like & speedy reply.

I checked my msgs & didn’t see any bot chores.

Full posting access sure would be nice :))

Okay. I found the Bookmark bot chore. Now that I’ve bookmarked… do I have full posting access now? And can I / how do I edit my original post to make those links proper?

It should all be in the message, but if you don’t have it then just spam like and comment on my posts, that should put you in Level 1 at least

I liked every post on the page lol. Is it possible to edit my original post? Level 1 possible?

So Thursday I did a ride and just barely made it back, with zero battery to spare after I had to hike the board up the last hill.

I chalked it up to the new Nova tires, but the next day I was riding and it just didn’t seem right how fast the battery level was going down. Then the light came on and I checked and 2 of the tires were flat. The funny thing is the board rode just fine, so props to the Novas for being such good runners with no air.

I pumped both of them back up, but only 1 held air.

What I’ve come to find is that the quality of tubes for these tires is just abysmal, so I went ahead and ordered the same inserts that @eks8jonboy used above and my plan is every time I get a flat I just swap in this stuff.

So as followup I’d like to post some piccies of my process

first thing I did was CNC me a fixture that was the same diameter as the Inside of the 7" Nova tire.

chose a suitable cutting device

cut and squeeze

Squeeze and squeeze. You’ll need tough skin for this part. I don’t have tough skin.

Then because the 2 halves of the rim don’t come together completely you’ll need to squeeze them together to get the screws in. This is what I had within 5 feet.

Throw the screws in, tighten in alternating order a bit at a time until the whole thing seats together flat

Note that you will take a 2 OZ weight penalty for each conversion.

I can get 3 conversions out of every insert I buy at $37 per . But I’ll take the cost of it over running out of battery midway every time.
