Did I blow up my motor? + ABS Overcurrent Faults!!

So I went on a little test ride today. I don’t think my motor ever got too hot (although I don’t have a temp sensor), but my controller was defiently getting a little toasty. So my issue is at the end of the ride, the motor started sounding a little odd. I thought it would resolve itsself after restarting my vesc, but nothing changed. At very high RPM, it sounds normal, but elsewhere it is quite loud. Any ideas if/how I messed it up? (I was running it at 108 amps during the ride)

@Evwan

Can you elaborate on the issue? im not seeing something concerning, try taking the wheel off and spinning it up again to get a better video? But freespin bench testing like this can show a bunch of false problems

Yea sorry, it’s definitely hard to tell from the video. It just does this weird thing where between 0-22ish mph it’s insanely loud, but once you go faster it suddenly gets a lot quieter. It’s super weird. I’ll see if I can get a better video tomorrow.

Could it be hall sensor problem? Try doing sensor detection.
At certain RPM vesc switches from using sensors to BEMF sensorless mode:

So if the problem goes away at certain RPM could be it.

I’d say don’t blow your motors no matter how hot they are, they could sue you for abuse.

More seriously, you should redo the motor calibration and see if it helps, If It got hot but It didn’t physically take fire and the magnets didn’t fall or got demagnetized it’s not likely to do damage to the motors, most likely your esc got too hot and rested itself or something like this

Interesting. Thanks for the ideas. I feel like you are right about it being a hall sensor issue. I’ll try with my old Stormcore or maybe try running sensorless to see if that’s the issue.

Well, I tried both connecting the old stormcore, sensored and senorless, but it still makes that loud screaming sound unless it is at an extremely high ERPM. So I guess somehow on my test ride the motor got damaged. I am assuming maybe bearings? So I guess my next step is to just to spend the $280 on a new motor, unless anyone else has an idea, or if it is repairable.

@Plurf @vap @Evwan

sounds like funky motor resosnance to me, not like some sort of failure

Remove the bell and check for wear marks on the magnets and stator where they could be rubbing.

Any magnets with a lot of wear marks should be checked to see if they are loose by levering them with a screwdriver.

If there is evidence of rubbing on just one side of the bell, then the bell could be misaligned. You can also check this by spinning up the motor slowly and watching the gap between the bell and the front housing. The bell shouldn’t be moving up and down during rotation.

@Tony_Stark Thanks for the reply. So I’m a little stuck. I’m trying to take apart the motor right now, and I successfully got the top part off and some rings unclipped, but I’m not sure how to actually separate the middle from the outside of the motor. Any ideas? The only screws I haven’t taken out are the ones on the sides of the motor.

Ohhh its got a big bearing.

You can try to screw it into a motor mount and then tap the shaft with a hammer. If they used retaining compound on the bearing you may have to take the screws out holding the outer big bearing support in place. Looks like there will be 4 of those screws around the side of the bell.

I’d also suggest putting the screws holding the shaft to the bell back in, otherwise the shaft may start sliding out of the bell.

Before you do this :point_up_2: please unscrew the bolts on the side of the can into the block with the bearing. Else you are never getting it off.

Edit: i misread @Tony_Stark already mentioned this.

In my ears it sounds like a magnet is touching and after certain rps goes back in place.

I’m really interested to know.

Sorry for the delay everyone. Thanks for the advice to get it open, it worked! So now that I’m inside, I’ve noticed a couple very small things. #1: There is a small piece of field grass wedged in between the magnets. (You can see this in the pictures). Not sure if that would cause much of anything. #2, there is some verrry light scratching on some of the magnets, but it honestly is so light it’s barely noticeable. I also don’t think any of the magnets are loose. So, I’m not really sure if I found the cause of my issue, unless someone sees something I don’t (Please lmk!). So, while I’m in here, what should I do to clean things up? There’s some sort of film over everything, but maybe that’s normal? Should I wipe it off? I’ve already blown it out with compressed air, and got a little debris to come out. @Escoot @Tony_Stark @vap

Upon closer inspection, it appears that there is a very small sharp piece of metal flaring out from the bottom part of the housing. A very small metal shaving came out of the motor as well. Should I just try to smash that flare back into place, or remove it?
