Deck/Enclosure Combo - What do you want?

Hey guys, I am looking into bringing a quality deck/enclosure combo with single color metallic and clear paint to the market for about $250. My initial thoughts are a deck around 41”x10” drop through, slight drop and W concave. As for the enclosure I was am considering an ABS or fiberglass enclosure that will hold up to 12s8p 21700 and ESC. The enclosure would be mounted with recessed screws going through the deck. My hope is it would be a great platform for DIY.

What do you guys want to see in a deck/enclosure combo?

If you want to sell the most, check out the carver decks like the Flux Motion and the Haero Bro and they probably should fit 16S12P 21700 battery underneath, you’ll sell loads of those.

Also don’t make it short or narrow. Although the battery pretty much forces your hand on that, if it fits one that large.

Are people using drop through deck for esk8? I mean there are many drop through decks in esk8, but almost everybody seems to be mounting trucks normally for the better ground clearance, especially with the big pack like 12S8P.

I wanted to start with a road specific deck/enclosure first. A mountain deck/enclosure is a great idea.

There are a lot more of those on the market already, and competing with the likes of eBoosted will be hard. To break new ground, I would target the extra-mega-huge-battery carver deck market. There’s not much if any competition yet.

Some use drop through decks with DKPs. With a slight drop at the ends, you should be able to use various types of trucks.

I really like Alan’s enclosures. The issue is shipping, mounting the enclosure and hoping you don’t mess up. It would be much easier to have a deck/enclosure combo where you don’t have to worry about all that. Also, you get a painted deck too. Thinking about 5-7 standard colors and additional cost for pearl/candy finishes. Epoxy/glass frit may also be an option in the future.

Very good point!

I don’t wanna piss on your parade, but that seems pretty optimistic.

Very keen to see what you come up with tho! Personally I would love to see more 44+ decks available! Small drop, nice concave and a unique shape :ok_hand:

If you’re going to the trouble of designing both a deck and a mating enclosure, make them an integrated set. Whatever ‘integrated’ means is up to you, but if it were me, I’d look hard at serviceability improvements, waterproofing, cable routing, minimizing total thickness, maximizing ground clearance, maximizing space for forward mounted motors, etc.

There are so many areas of improvement when you have control over both sides of the equation - this is where a huge amount of frustration comes from in a diy build

It’s a wasted opportunity if you just churn out a similar looking deck to what’s available and an sightly different enclosure.

Really good points!

The deck/enclosure combo is meant to be integrated to allow for a solid seal between the enclosure and deck. Cable management will definitely be addressed. There are so many examples of cable management as an afterthought.

Epoxy connectors through the enclosure, can’t go wrong

Agree 100%, it was a pain point of mine for years

look into creating a 44+ deck like a 44 demonseed or similar
there is a big market for that currently

The old Demonseed 44" deck must be a monster. There is a friend of mine that rides a deck from Bioboards. I think it is 46". I can imagine that 46" start to feel unwieldy until you are going 18+ MPH. Longer decks are something to think about. The other issue is sourcing them.

Custom paint service is already set up in house. That why the cost is relatively low.

You have experience molding laminated wood, and laying up fiberglass?

There’s a large variety of skills required to produce both a deck and enclosure, and do it well, at volume, for the price you’re talking about. There’s a handful of guys here, currently trying, and struggling to produce something resembling a finished product. Hence why well designed enclosures are so appreciated.

Of which (no offense) paint is probably the lowest priority on that list.

Agreed

I would have the decks manufactured. I am not going to be making them myself.

And the enclosures???
