Dc/dc converter recommendation

Hey everyone,

Since winter is coming i wanted to add some LED’s on my skateboard so I bought a dc/dc converter LM2596 problem is it warms up a lot and shuts off because of safety reason.
Would appreciate it if someone can recommend a reliable dc dc converter that works nicely and warm while outputting 2A max. (Input voltage is 42V max)

Thanks in advance for help.

Thats only got a 1.5A continuous rating

Pay not attention to the idiot

And that’s only in open air too. :slightly_smiling_face:
If it has heat shrink or is next to a warm pack or ESC then the rating goes down even more.

That’s a step-up (boost) converter though. :slightly_smiling_face:
That 5A rating is…umm…optimistic IMO. “Max” is typically not a true continuous rating, just a short-term capability.

Ok I’ll shut up and go away lol. I’m not very helpful today

What output voltage(s) do you need?
Where will it be mounted?

I use this one.

It will me mounted close to BMS, slightly away from VESC, but in the enclosure

Hey Mooch what would you recommend, would appreciate if its small

There is a 10A one like so: https://www.ebay.com/itm/10A-DC-DC-6-5-60V-to-1-25-30V-Adjustable-Converter-Step-Down-Module/402456778157?hash=item5db44b15ad:g:phQAAOSwiS9fbZgj
Thought I can’t speak to it’s reliability or efficacy.

If you have the room, these are solid: https://www.amazon.com/Diymore-Synchronous-Converter-Step-Down-Module/dp/B072BN43P8

Just saw you need 12V, will probably save some space getting something that does not adjust voltage out. Plenty of 12V5A buck converters out there.

I use one of these, even at 4A output it doesn’t get warm.

Go for isolated bucks. Oherwise overvoltage will fuck you over, when you turn it on and off rapidly…

Do you have one you recommend?

I use a beefier version of this one and it has worked flawlessly. Mine is rated for 60volts 10amps, I pull 5-7 amps through it and it does great.

These are all good candidates IMO.

Thanks!

The Delta board’s 4.2A current rating is based on using a 300LFM fan. How hot did it get (what current levels?) for you in an enclosure? Did you heat shrink it?

For the CUI converter, did you use the recommended input/output caps? Or was it stable without them?
