Has anyone thought about or tried adapting any of the cycling shoe cleat systems on a board instead of bindings?
I think the quick release feature could cause premature ejections on esk8
Seen plenty of step in snowboard type boots and bindings used off-road.
Yeah snowboarding clips would be a better choice if I had to guess
Snowboard should be the way to go because cycling shoes with clips look like they’d be painful to run in if you bailed at a lower speed and didn’t want to roll. They’d probably be uncomfortable while riding too since they all have some pretty thin soles
I don’t think bailing at low speed with bindings is very realistic, or at least not very advisable. I’ve only ever used freebord hook/half bindings even with that it’s not a great idea. I just never want to run off a board at any speed tbh, I’m either going slow enough to hop off and stop straight on landing, or I’m rolling - trying to run feels like a great way to fall unexpectedly and uncontrollably
If you put a foot down in the dirt they probably wouldn’t work until you cleaned them. Road bikes are typically only used on pavement.
Mountain bike “clipless” pedals, which ironically you clip into, are pretty good in the dirt but something like this looks more appropriate
The bicycle clips are made to be able to clip in and out quickly if you know what you’re doing. I forgot that snowboard clips cannot do that
I have not looked at all the systems in detail but from what I’ve seen the snowboard systems are pretty chunky and are made for big snowboard boots. The so-called “clipless” bike systems are made for quickly getting in and out and the two-bolt systems are used by MTB riders so dirt in the cleats is not an issue in practice. I also see recently now there is a mag pedal system that uses magnets.
I have F5s on all my boards and getting in and out of the “half” bindings is no issue but the heel straps definitely are more problematic. You really need them for serious off-roading including jumping but I never ride with them around traffic (or simply don’t have them on my road boards) since it’s impossible to get out of them quickly.
The F5s take up a lot of space on the deck and it seems we’re well overdue for a better system. I’ve also tried the Freebord and tomiboi clips and found them all to be pretty useless and/or uncomfortable.
What’s great about the bike systems is there are a ton of available shoe options.
All the bike systems are designed to handle strong downward, upward, and forward and backward forces and you have to twist your foot inwards or outwards to release the binding.
I raced Dh MTB and I think the step in snowboarding binding are a better bet. If you try mtb perhaps Time ATAC pedal retention system will have the most float but the heel out motion to clip out doesn’t seem compatible with esk8 but keep us posted
Btw my Santa cruise V10 is for sale on eBay now
A mechanical binding could be a serious game changer in some circumstance. The connection you could have with the board could be direct and make your board more responsive to input.
When I was in cycling I used bindings from a company called Speedplay. They allowed you foot to rotate about 10 degrees in either direction before it released. Maybe a system like this could be applicable.
I can see a system like this used in racing. Maybe high speed riding too.
Seems useless to me, those clips that are permenently attached to your standing platform make decks obsolete due to the fact that they restrict you from pressing the concave edges of your deck. Force will always be transfered through the middle or where your mount is located. Thats the beauty of bindings, they let you use your deck still. Else you might aswell just get a flat plate like a snowboard.
Plus with all the foot movements and shaking of our sport (especially in turning your feet) i highly doubt a system that unlocks when tethering your feet is going to be reliable.
Stooge race decks are flat and seem to carve just fine.
True, but bet anyone with a v5 wishes it had 10mm+/- of cave.
Fully flat feels shit
Good to know.
