Creality Ender 3, setup, mods/improvements and how-tos [serious]

Yep. Took 20 minutes or so to put everything together.

Link to kit?

I opted for single steeper version just wanted to stiffen up the cross bar the extruded is on. Z never moves that fast to need dule stepper IMO but I’m still running bowden tube

WHY did I wait to go direct drive… I fought extruder skipping forever. Bowden tube RIP.

For those of you running direct drive with the weight of a stock motor, how much are you dropping acceleration? I still have some issues with PETG edge details while printing as low as 25 mm/s.

Yo! Does anyone else have one of these silent motherboards?! This thing literally makes zero noise now. Insane.

I was having to drop my feedrate down to 70% or so before I upgraded to dual z steppers. Now I’m running 100% feedrate and getting quality prints. Just finishing a benchy. I’ll post some pics soon.

I didn’t find a dual stepper version w/ a timing belt, I guess you might just need one or the other?

Where the silent fan mods at?

First thing I did. Best upgrade yet. In my enclosure I hear absolutely nothing.

It’s freaky walking past my 3d printing room with 2 printers running and having to open the door to check if they’re done. I love it.

Which board did you end up running? I cranked up speed now that I have direct drive and my girlfriend is gonna go nuts when she is here. :joy:

Skr mini but I’ve heard the Creality brand upgrade is the same volume wise

What do you guys think about this direct drive mod

From everything I’ve seen it is a solid option. I may switch from what I currently use:

However, I’ll probably use this remix of SpeedDrive when my new extruder and motor arrives:

I’ve seen the bmg here and there, what are the benefits of that extruder?

It has gear reduction to increase torque and grips the filament from both sides. Honestly I don’t think it will make much difference for me… the current setup is already a huge improvement over the bowden tube.

Yeah, only a real advantage when printing super flexy fliament like TPU or conductive filament.

Hmm I do like the sound of printing tpu…

Need to get my petg dialed in before I start messing with something else I suppose

I don’t have the bmg, just a generic dual gear extruder, but it’s eliminated all extruder binding and slipping I’ve come across and allowed me to bump up my print speed 20 mm/sec.

I print at 60mm a second never had it skip extruder single gear on 1 side

20mm/s for fist few layers

When I upgraded to Capricorn tubing I also upgraded to a all mettle extruder that came with a stronger spring

I could print faster but never tried to work out the limit as it gets noisier.

I always used filiment guides befor side mounting the spool. Creality filiment path to the extruder is a awful design adding a lot of friction loads of printerble mods to fix this.

If you skiping
I’d check
hot end temp
Bowden tube push fittings
Bowden tune seated correctly and not melted
Spoil tangled up
Filiment is consistent diameter
Filiment path

I was up at 80mm/s and was skipping on specialty filaments (glitter flakes) for reference. Embedded filaments needed a larger nozzle size to print the flakes without clogging. I fought the issue for months.

Agreed that the plastic extruder can’t hold up to the filament being on top. My filament filed a nasty groove in the guide within a month.
