Off topic sort of but someone should take an Old Cafe Racer frame and turn it electric… The old cafe racers look super sweet and should have room for a huge battery and motor…

If you mean by bigger - more Ah, then I disagree.
For Fast charging you want higher voltage. So, same overall Wh capacity, but higher voltage, lower Ah/current. Additionally you want higher C-charge rate capable packs.

The 6kW charging I described is technically possible with a 30s2p pack of A123 cells - that will cost you just ~$75… :heart_eyes:

On level 3 charging, Chademo is “easy” to hack and make work, but your minimum system voltage has to be 250 V or more

CCS is more challenging and I couldn’t find anyone that pulled it off

Been digging a bit for my dream eMotorcycle

So if I understand the video correctly, the j1772 outputs 110/220 v, capable of delivering 30a(AC ?)
Now, a 8p pack of 30q can be fast charged at 32a, just saying, that’s less than an hour for a 24ah pack to reach 80%

Is that 250v a hard cutoff? I know others have had issues with chademo and voltages but not sure if the spec has room in the lower range or not. I’m doing an EV that I’m aiming around 200v or so for traction pack

I struggle to find useful info for DIY electric vehicles because everything is spread across a bunch of different forums or just doesn’t exist at all, and the market for it is super small as well which makes things harder

Sure, my wish for a 20kW (30s 200A) VESC is likely to remain a wish because of the high voltage.

You don’t have to take very wish of the community serious, but why throw the baby out with the bathwater?

Also last time I checked my math 75x300 is more then 17kW :smiley:

I think the biggest problem is that if you’re going to be handling these kinds of voltages idealy you’d hold a degree or certification in relating matter. Theres a reason not everyone can install anything they want legally in thier own house(atleast in my country). Makin misstakes here are suddenly lethal.

Also while DIY is awesome, I wonder how easy it is to get road legal. Preferably not too easy as a bunch of +30kW DIY vehicles on public roads sound hazardous

Yeah, I agree it’s important to keep safety and legality in mind. In California you can get away with a lot of DIY mods as long as you comply with some things. E.g. on a moto: start with a road legal vehicle with correct paperwork, keep at the very least the original frame with VIN number, comply with emission and noise standards (a given for electric), and stay within the power limit of your vehicle class (I don’t think there’s a roof for Motos)… et voila.

It’s hard to believe, but in some sense this is truly the country of the free, at least you are free to endanger yourself as much as you like. Some states don’t even require helmets on a motorcycle… :person_shrugging:

According to law we have to do inspection of all road active vehicles once a year as minimum. If you decide to make it inactive you have to redo the inspection if you put it active again.

If you modify something, especially if welding or so, you need separate inspection for that.
Think electric conversion falls under special circumstances such as hobby/enthusiast inspection, which is far more expensive

Its both good and bad. Bad cause its hard to do cool shit. Good cause its hard to get shitty cars on the road. Dont even get me started on our ridic road and pollution taxes, hint: they’re expensive.

Government has a 0 death/year in traffic goal. They admit they’ll never reach it but having it as standard is the only reasonable thing. Not sure how I feel about this but we sure do have very few accidents with lethal outcome (less then 30 deaths per million people, 46% of which involves a car)

Is this the full engine with ICE or just the electric stuff? If it’s just electric I’d love to hear your solution for this as I am doing the same thing, I know what I’m gonna be doing but love hearing how others do stuff

Yeah, while the spec goes down to 50 V, most of the chargers only work down to the 250 V limit, and good luck figuring it out without actually checking model by model, at least that was what I found after a lot of digging. What I really wanted is a way to make CCS work, it can be done, but requires a lot more work on the software side of the vehicle to charger communication

A VESC can also drive 2 wire DC motors without issues.

That is extremely limited, but I guess for a last mile delivery vehicle with local charging options when loading up deliveries that will work. One consideration here may be the availability of batteries in the short term. More vehicles can go out this year to replace last mile gas vehicles and upgrade the fleet as batteries can be sourced in greater numbers.

Have you looked at the 100V 200A ESC from EBMakers (MakerX)?

Its a pre-order and it has been since the dawn of time. Kidding mostly, but I don’t think its coming any time soon, and its been up on his site for 6-8 months now.
