Yes yes, Y’all! I finally finished a build that I’m proud enough to post here. After the untimely death of the Namaskate Build due to dirty, rotten thievery, I quickly moved forward on this build that I’d been collecting parts for over the course of the last year.
The name “Chumbalaka” is taken from a Mexican children’s song about Dancing Skeletons and “Dia de Las Muertos” aka “Day of the Dead” that my kids were obsessed with for years. In spanish it’s actually gibberish and means nothing (kinda like supercalifragilisticexpialodocious) but it’s catchy as hell and I’ve found myself on more than one occasion singing this song under my breath.
I’ve long had a fixation on Sugar Skulls and the traditions surrounding the DOTD to to point where I have artwork around my house and even some ink on my body celebrating these colourful little guys. It follows that it was a no brainer to choose this design that @Sender had on hand after getting the board and enclosure shipped to Alabama from Peru. Thx to @eBoosted for hooking me up with his always stellar work as well.
When Tim first sent me a pic of the finished product I was blown away and knew this board would be a head turner and something special.
For the Drivetrain, the original plan was to keep this board in the realm of Thane as I was somewhat skeptical of Pneumatics bc of flats, balancing etc… Accordingly, I purchased a gear drive from @Boardnamics and 220s and found a set of 120mm Clouds here. About a month ago, I tried 8" knobby tires on Mountainboard setup and knew I could never go back to Thane. That and some parts issues quickly lead me to shift the drivetrain to a set of @Psychotiller hubs on Clevers that I’d acquired half a yr ago for a future build. These were paired w a set of precision pulleys made by @Savage1 for a few of us in a small batch. These things are bloody gorgeous, folks. Phil, your work is top shelf, homie. I had to throw these on some BN 270s as the axles on the 220s were too short. This is paired with Caliber base plates, Riptide bushings and pivot cups and Flipsky 170KV 6374 battle-harded motors prchased from @Anubis. Ratio is 3:1 on BN XL Mounts. I’m presently running these without idlers.
Bench Test
The battery is a 12s4p semi-flex pack w loop ley that I made over the course of about 2 wks from Molicel P42a’s. This is paired with an LLT smart bms with a fused charge port (10 amps). I’m very proud of this pack (my third) as it’s nice and clean and was made much more quickly than my first 2 attempts.
The Controller is a Xenith V2.1 from @BuildKitBoards. I extended the phase wires so that they would sit outside my enclosure right from the pcb to avoid adding any resistance in the phase circuit. In order to route these wires through the enclosure I used a gromet mounted to the enclosure. In hindsight, I grossly overestimated the needed length and the extra length is taking up valuable real estate but wtv. Will correct at a later date.
Hole was made w a step drill bit. I dropped the gromet in boiling water prior to jamming it in there (thx for the tip @glyphiks). Super glue and silicone have sealed the edges and all the cables are routed through the same hole including sensor wires. These XL mounts are hella long. Traditional motor positions would’ve def made things easier but this is what I had on hand when I decided to change directions. Work with what cha got!
I also DIY’d a heatsink that will sit inside the enclosure bc the universal heatsink that @surfnacho sold me put the esc in a position that screwed up the placement of all of my other components. 5mm of 6061 and some thermal compound will be better than a sharp stick in the eye in any case. I countersunk the m3s to allow the controller to sit low enough. Something also fucked up in the jig I made so it’s not centered on the Xenith. It ain’t pretty but it’s practical and it’ll be inside my enclosure anyway.
A Hoyt Midnight Puck is the icing on this spicy cake. My countryman @moddedlife printed me a Puck Puck Bruce mod shell in barter for some assistance given in his bloody unbelievable Ironman build last summer. Fuck that thing is ridonk. Will likely give it a try at some point but tbh, I find the puck pretty comfortable.
Went for a test run today and everything is working quite nicely. Will proceed to waterproof and secure everything now that functionality is confirmed
Welp, that’s all I got for ya other than to say a heartfelt Gracias to this community for all the assistance and invaluable knowledge not to mention shits and giggles. A thousand thank-you’s
