Cheap FOCer! (VESC compatible 4.12 redesign) (Tested and Functional)

I wouldn’t recommend that one. It’s Rds(on) is high and power rating is low. The one linked below is preferable.

@shaman Is it safe to run this without the TVS protection diode for a while? I ran out…

You’ll probably be ok

I tell myself that everytime I test a new build

I’m excited to see what the cheap FOCer can do. Thanks.

@shaman If you haven’t already you should conciser becoming an affiliate for some of the online electronics parts suppliers. It’d be great if you could set it up so that anyone wanting to build the cheap FOCer could just click a link and have everything added to a shopping cart. I’m all about click conservation. Plus being an affiliate you’d get a kick back when someone uses your link to make a purchase.

Do you work for flipsky?

This sort of thing is what I’m working on for the Cheap FOCer 2. Auto loading an LCSC cart and the gerbers ready to go for JLCPCB. The only thing is that LCSC’s stock changes often and substitutes for particular components will have to be found kind often. I’m trying to think of a graceful way to keep the LCSC BOM sort of a living document so it can always be updated with current part numbers by trusted people.

I’ll have to look into the affiliate thing. Idk if if I’m cool enough for that yet.

Cool enough? You’re the Shaman. You’re already doing the work you might as well get a little compensation for referring people to buy components.

Online merchants want to make it as easy as possible for people to buy from them. If you become affiliate and a merchant can see your links are diving sales they might help you create that “living document” or a shopping cart dedicated to you as an affiliate that makes it easier swap out components based on availability.

If you contact the sales reps for a few of the bigger parts suppliers explain what you are doing. Send them links to everything especially your forum posts. Once they see the business you have created for them already they will probably make you an affiliate so you don’t start referring people to one of their competitors. At the bare minimum I’d bet they can set it up so that you are auto-contacted when a component is out of stock with a list of other components options they stock that you could recommend as a replacement.

Im sure just asking regarding the Affiliate thing would be enough - most companies are happy to help, and they probably have a way to trace back orders for the Gerber file and possible linked LCSC orders as a way to determine your actual traffic.

As for the update on the BOM - if LCSC has an API (didnt look since im at work) that we can use. I’m sure myself or a few other programmers would have a easy go of it to make an auto updating BOM based on desired specs of the parts, otherwise there are other ways to automate it.

This affiliate things sounds kinda cool. Gotta prove my designs first though. I’m sure nobody wants to affiliate themselves with dysfunctional tech. Hopefully the Cheap FOCer 2 can live up to the expectation.

@shaman LCSC is currently out of stock on some components.

LCSC doesn’t have LDO regulator with the same specs.

I don’t know how much the part specs can vary. Is there a capacitor brand that you prefer? Do you have any recommendations for replacement parts?

Thanks.

Found quite a few LDOs on LCSC that would be ok. Sometimes the search functions can be tricky. Check out either of these below.

The small electrolytic caps are generic and it doesn’t matter much about which ones to use. The ones you found should be fine.

Don’t know how much patience you have but the Cheap FOCer 2 is coming along. I’m hoping for it to be better in pretty much every way. I’m not sure if you would want to wait for it or not.

Are you still thinking about going with the VESC 6 foundation for the Cheap FOCer 2 @shaman?

Well beyond thinking. It’s happened

I thought the “Cheap FOCers” (this thread) were all 4.12 redesign, and the “Some New FOCers” (other thread) were VESC 6 based. Do I have it wrong?

Thanks.

You’re right but the Cheap FOCer 2 is VESC 6 based as well…just not high voltage. I’ll create a new thread for the cheap FOCer 2 when it’s time

All the variants use the same DRV?

No. The cheap FOCers use the same DRVs as the respective VESC hardware that they’re based on.

Cheap FOCer (VESC 4.12 based) = DRV8302
Cheap FOCer 2 (VESC 6 based) = DRV8301

Thanks for the help. I’m making a Onewheel and my motor is arriving today . This is my first real build. I’m anxious to get started. Patients is not one of my virtues.:grimacing: Since it’s going to take a couple weeks to get the parts I want to get them ordered. I’m ordering extra. I’m assuming many of the components will work with the V2. It’d be great if I can order any additional parts needed for V2 as well. Do you have a V2 BOM you can share?
