I have always wanted to build my own electric roller skates/blades, and I was hoping others would also be interested in the idea. It could end up with building only 10 of them—it doesn’t necessarily have to go further than that. Let’s see if more people get interested towards the end of the project. But it shouldn’t be more than 10 for starters, and you don’t have to fully commit from the start.
I want it to be based on Escend Blades (which never have any stock), but built out of carbon fibre instead of aluminium, or at least wrapped with carbon fibre, resulting in carbon fibre-reinforced walls. It will look really professional—I think even better than the Escend—so it won’t have a DIY look to it.
You can add your own boots to it or use Doop boots—up to you.
I want to follow a very modular approach with the building. I already have a RO brushless BLDC motor in mind. So we’ll discuss the battery pack and the design, then people can commit so that we order 10 modules of a single unit. We’ll take it one unit at a time in the process. The same goes for the charger, ESC—you get the picture.
I’m located in Austria, so I guess we should make it an EU project. It might get expensive if I also include the US, and we could have problems shipping batteries. I’m not a law expert, so I don’t want to burn my hands here.
I have already decided to go with Aisler (made in Germany; they really produce high-quality PCBs for reasonable prices) for producing the 4-layer PCBs, and I will hand-solder all the components ordered from Mouser. We might even go for 6-layer PCBs, but 4 might be more than enough considering costs.
We will go with Molicel cells to build up our battery, which will be soldered directly onto a PCB using U-tags. So literally everything will be replaceable and fixable in this project.
For the transceivers, I will use Bluetooth LE unicast (ISO packets) to talk to the two receivers to ensure proper sync and low latency. The skates will also transmit info in the ACK packet back to the remote, up to 240 bytes of payload.
The idea is now out there. Let’s hear from the community.
