BOTBOTY | Tomiboi based commuter build

Yeah, i use brush-on silicone conformal coating for PCBs. The stuff cures kinda soft, which is probably just fine for immobilizing wires, ut nit for protecting magnets. I’ve never used the acrylic conformal coating before, so idk what the hardness is. Probably still fine for the windings.

The stuff is extremely similar to clear nail polish. So similar, in fact, that you could probably use it :eyes:

though the purpose-made stuff is probably better

You think 419D would be as good as the red stuff for stator hardening?

No. I’ve used both. That red 4228A is good

Can’t speak for the acrylic, but the varnish wicked itself into all of the wires and started to solidify after a couple of minutes, it’s pretty good for the application.

Last of the supplies came in today, so the legstick is finished and installed. ESC and enclosure ports are the next step.

If I ever need a lean-actuated throttle, I can hit you up right? I probably don’t actually need one but I’d love to tell all my friends that I have a guy for that.

I think the design is settled enough that these things can be commissioned.

So I decided I should put in one weekend of work on this thing, and it turns out this board has been sitting around for the past 6 months with only [one weekend of work] needed in order to finish it. Makes me feel kinda silly for sitting around with nothing to ride, but hey

Electron plumbing: complete!

Lightning containment unit: bolted!

Board: ready to ride!

Ass: hot!

(Size comparison)

Did a couple laps around the park, and I still need to get the trucks/throttle/brakes dialed in how I like em, but it’s running good. I’m digging the torque, I’m digging the grip, I’m digging how the BKB wheels’ responsiveness feels almost like thane. I don’t think this has made be a pneumatics convert though.

I still have plans for adding fenders, a shoulder strap, and bash guards, but those are scheduled for whenever I get around to them.

So thanks to @tomiboi for donating the deck, and being one of the few deck makers who does not practice height discrimination against tall folks. The proportions are excellent.
And thanks to @eBoosted for the enclosure! It will be getting a durability test :eyes: but it feels so beefy that I’m not worried.

It looks like a legit ride to me :hamburger:

I learned several pieces of important information today:

  1. This thing rips!
  2. When the weather forecast says “0% chance of rain”, what they actually mean by that is “torrential downpour”
  3. Butyl tape will not remain stuck to the front and back interior of this type of enclosure, where there is no flange and the inside surface is rough
  4. Eskates experience a serious loss of torque when the enclosure is flooded. They lose 100% of the torque, in fact

Not to worry, the battery is healthy and barely got wet. I’ve cut it out of the board to dry separately, and I’ve procured 300lbs of rice to cover my work bench with. I’ll reassemble everything next week to see if the ESC and BMS are still working right.

You found something butyl rope/tape doesn’t stick to? !!?!? Crazy.

Maybe if you lightly sanded a ring around it, brushed a slim gel coat of epoxy around it, then lightly rinsed the epoxy with water & paper towel (to remove any blush) — I bet butyl rope would stick very well to that slick epoxy.

I know, right? I’m going to put a gel coat on the inside, then use epoxy putty to make my own flange, so the butyl has some more area to engage with. Then it should matter less if it sticks or not.

Replace the toasted BMS and it’s reading voltage OK, but I’m paranoid now and so I’m wondering if it’s normal for LLT units to make a faint noise after being plugged in? Super high frequency static screech, could just be FETs switching i guess, but it stopped after a couple minutes

Yes, that’s normal for that specific model of LLT bms.

Sorry for my ignorance, what is the purpose of a comformal coating on the windings?

How’d you do that? I kept getting “post can’t be empty” when I tried to post with just the quotes.
