No need to start a new thread unless you want to. No hard rules about organizing here - it’s your thread so do what you like. Personally i like rkp better than dkp trucks but im no connoisseur. Just like the simplicity and feel.
Thanks! I ended up making a decision on the parts. I went with Propulsion Boards RKP kit (trucks + motors) and a set of 110 Cloudwheel Rovers.
RKP indeed made more sense for its simplicity and the Loaded board is flexible enough to begin with. No need to make the thing even more wobbly.
Will post updates as soon as everything gets here.
New question, is there some sort of rule of thumb when choosing the gear ratio according to wheel size?
I’m making a pretty big jump from the tiny 75mm to 110mm. The motor pulley is 15T and for the wheels I have 38T and 40T. I don’t need top speed; I need torque and steep hill climb ability. The motors are 6355 170 KV (2,450W each)
With that said, is the 40T going to be good here or I will need bigger wheel pulleys?
you can think of it relatively.
110mm from 75mm is. ~1.47x, 110/75
so your top speed with same gearing and motors is 1.47 faster, and torque is 1.47 less.
what were your previous gear sizes?
if it’s 58T/17T stock boosted? that’s 58/17 = 3.41:1 gear ratio.
you need it to be 1.47 times larger ratio to slow back down to same speed/torque
so 1.47 * 3.41 = 5.00
with a 15T motor pulleys: 15T * 5.0 = 75T wheel pulley. to be the same. that’l be too big for 110mm so won’t exist.
so go as big a wheel pulley as you can fit.
lower kv motors can also compensate, same ratios apply.
Thank you! That makes perfect sense.
Yes, I was on stock boosted v1 ratio (and motors).
Going with bigger motors now so it won’t be apples to apples, but I will try a bigger pulley. I already have a set of 300mm belts which a calculator tells me should work for a 50T wheel pulley. I’m going to draw up and print a set to test with.
same kv?
I never found exact kv value for the original boosted v1 motors. Might be in the 190-210 range.
So now I’m moving from boosted v1 5055 to Propulsion Boards 6355 170 kv.
Allright, we’re printing the first 50T test pulley.
For now, it has to be 50T because that’s the only belt set I have. If we need larger pulleys, it’s an easy update to the design but I will have to get new belts.
The 50T pulley is quite …substantial compared to the 40T ones that came with the wheels.
It’s pretty close to the wheel od, might take a hit on rougher roads.
We’ll see, I’ll experiment with both and see how each feel. I do hope I won’t have to go bigger than 50T…
These wheels look sooo cool with the Loaded deck.
Small side effect from the bigger motors, I have to relocate the vesc. I just need to move it a little backwards. I might make a better enclosure for it.
I can’t wait to ride the thing.
This thing is a blast.
I only took it out for a few laps in the parking lot but it’s a completely different beast. I set the motors to 50A and it’s sooo much faster now. The 50T pulleys are good, I don’t need it to go faster. To be honest I could go with even slightly bigger ones, but I don’t know if I can get away with that with 110 wheels.
With the braking set to -50A, I literally flew off it. Didn’t fall, managed to run it off but it was so sudden. I need to dial it down but not too much so I can still get down the steep hill near the house.
Motors are dead cool, but the belts feel a bit warm after riding for a few mins. Maybe I’ve overtightened them, or the 3d printed pulleys are not quite perfect.
