Built my first DIY board last week. Its a stormcore 60D+, Torqueboards Direct Drive 75kv, with a boundmotor Panasonic 21700 pack. These are my current vesc settings…
I’m mainly concerned about the max regen as I dont want to fry my battery or anything. I asked Boundmotor for the specific cell type to figure out Regen ( i was reading you calculate it by multiplying charge current by the P count?) but all they would tell me is its a 70a max pack and sent me the vesc settings for their Flash board because it uses the same battery and a dual vesc setup.
Knowing the specific cell type would help. Also if the battery has a discharge BMS between it and the ESC. Such a BMS might have a limit which you cannot exceed.
In general though, even if most cells aren’t rated for it, a charge current half that of the discharge seems safe enough for short bursts from esk8 usage. Don’t use it to descend steep hills, but you definitely want to be able to stop in an emergency situation.
If it’s a 70A max pack, then 35A battery current max and 17.5A battery current max regen would be the appropriate settings for each side of the ESC.
Then again, some people will say that they increase it to however much they need to brake, so to each their own Just know it isn’t safe.
i have the motor & battery current set to -60A and i feel they are really strong brakes with no issues. personally i like knowing if i need to stop fast i can.
It’s safe to set this setting a lot higher then your battery would normally charge because it’s such a short burst and is more a ceiling then anything else. As soon as your board even begins to slow down, the battery regen drop dramatically, at least this is what I have observed while riding with telemetry devices that can show things like motor and battery current.
