Has anyone tried using portal axles to increase clearance on bottom of board? All these gears from @moon and e-toxx are great, but I wonder if they could be designed in a way to increase the clearance height to avoid rocks a bit more.
Here is a portal axle if don’t know: https://4wheelsandamotor.com/ask4waam/what-the-diff-portal-axles-explained/

Interesting that you can raise and lower it by flipping the axle but I don’t see busses normally driving while lowered.
Also this looks concerning when trying to miniaturize for esk8. I only see them used on really large vehicles.
As someone who came from the offroad world previously, they’re to expensive to even come close to being worth it.
Honestly not sure how you could even put these into place in an eskate because the rely on the power coming through the center of the axle, which eskates do not. So you’d end up with an apparatus transferring power from above the axle at the motor shaft through ~4 gears to get around the acle and down to the new wheel mount location?
If you had a bajaboard and custom machines spindles to add a reduction box into it, that could be feasible, but it would just be another failure point on a board with exponentially more of those than any other kind of eskate.
On a different route. If you were to come up with a way this could replace a hub motor thane cover and transfer power down through a reduction box to more appropriately retain torque and power for large pneumatics, that could be interesting, and almost maybe feasible. You would however run into a few issues when trying to hold the gear reduction spindle in place since the hub could not serve as a mounting point as the kingpin or flange would in a normal vehicle axle.

Thanks for the informative reply, my only other idea was a off road electric freeboard, but maybe someone on here might work on that eventually haha
Our axles don’t spin so you wouldn’t need a gear box at each corner. In theory you can make a hanger the has an axle at a lower point, increasing ground clearance. This would throw the geometry way off so probably wouldn’t work
