So there is so many options out there from so many price points its a bit overwhelming, even when searching the fourms here.
I am still trying to figure out my monster board I am rebuilding. Being that I am spoiled by the remote on my Verreal RS-AT having a full display and I would like to have some thing like that on the other board.
It seems there isn’t alot of remote that are well reviewed and don’t cost a left nut.
My crazy thoughts started when I remembered I could just buy the esc and remote from the verreal rs and throw it in with a couple verreal motors. The verreal motors are a bit pricey but assuming I could find some cheaper but still reliable ones (Found some as cheap as 50$ for similure sized motors but I’m not sure about reliability). Would that be a bad idea as all or not? I have had one drop out in about 500miles on the remote and the gradual braking has saved me a couple times.
on the topic of motors, how much difference would there be between a 6368 and a 6374? I can’t imagine much, but I barely know what I’m on about as it is lol.
This is better slated for the noob question thread but I’ll go ahead and answer this
motors themselves don’t change the amount of power your board has, unless you’re changing motor KV. Going from 6368 to 6374 will do nothing for you. It’ll give you more thermal headroom incase your motors were getting hot, but the hobbywing esc in the verreal doesn’t have enough power to overheat those motors anyways.
We have a few remotes with screens on them for VESCs, but they are expensive. If you live in a less urban area with minimal RF, remotes like the flipsky vx2 are probably your best bet. If you live in an urban city (which I presume you don’t because your bio says you live in ft wayne) then you’re better off sticking to a remote with a good radio like a hoyt puck.
Also, if you want a powerful board that verreal esc is not gonna do anything special for you. Look into a vesc. We have like half a million threads that you could find with the search button.
Sorry didn’t know there was a noob area, my last thread in this section so I just jumped back in.
I thought as much with the size of the motor, but figured I’d make sure.
Fort Wayne isn’t exactly New York, but its not the middle of the woods either. I assume if I’m not having issues with my RC cars/trucks/boats I shouldn’t have issues with a remote right? Honestly not a fan of the pucks, a guy I ride with has one and aside from no screen I’m not a fan of how it sits in the hand(and thats ignoring the price)
I’m not looking for a ton of power or speed with this board, if it was the same as the one I have it would be fine (and I think the gearing works out to be about the same). I plan to ride that one when and where the 150 street wheels won’t take me.
From what I have been about to figure out I can go for the Verreal route for about 300-400$ or I can go Maker X 4, VX2, and motors for 400 to 600 (depending on motors vesc I would try and find some lower kv motors) I’m trying not to spend a ton on this board as it is a backup thats not gonna get alot of riding.
We have a massive collection of community designed puck shells that are awesome, but it’s not a cheap remote.
There’s also more to getting a vesc unfortunately. Makerx escs don’t have power button circuits (antisparks) built in so you’d need an external one that flipsky sells.
Vescs are something you typically grow into, so you can even start by just using an existing rc controller that you may have and upgrade to a vx2 down the line.
also, you may have thermal issues with that esc. Pneumatics are significantly less efficient than urethane. You’ll also get nearly half the range. The makerx escs have massive heatsinks built in,
I have seen alot of designs for shells some look better than others but I’m still partial to my pistol grips.
I have an anti spark loop key in my plans currently as I’m running duel 4.12’s (issue is the current brushed motors have no starting torque if I could figure out why I wouldn’t need to do any of this).
I’m currently using one of those mini rc controllers, and the only real issue I have is no screen, it would be nice to be able to see my speed, voltages, and gear on the remote.
The Verreal I have is running pneu, though at a higher pressure than I used to run my big board.
You will have much more potential to upgrade in the future if you go with a Vesc based esc and at the end of the day you will be much more happy with the performance. Keep your eye out for used ones. You can often get some really good deals in this community. I am in no way “recommending” flipsky escs but they just came out with a pretty cheap Vesc 6. I would stick with makerX and the used parts market if it were I.
As far as remote, the maytechs seem to be around the same price as a puck, but have a screen. Split trigger design. Very popular. I like it more than my puck.
I recently tried it on a build for a few months. Super impressed… I never had to change the batteries once sand the thing could take a beating. However, if you french fry when you’re supposed to pizza, you gonna have a bad day…
