Advice and tips how to increase range.

So I got this setup which I modified like 10,000 times already, but currently this is the first time I’m running AT wheels with it.

Specs:
6374 190KV motors * 2
Gearing: 15T/62T
Hubs: NewBee
Tires: Meepo Cyclones
Battery: 10s5p , 21700 40T Samsung (around 2 y/o battery, used mildly)
Vesc: Unity
My weight: 75kg

Currently I’m getting around 30km range tops.
Any tips of how to increase range ? will 12s4p will do any effect ? I know that changing the hubs to lighter hubs can do the work as well, but, can something still be done using these hubs (which I like) ?
Perhaps also changing the gearing ratio ? I prefer range over top speed if that makes any sense.

10x.

30km range out of that is excellent. I struggle to get 30km out of a battery the same size on urethane.

There are some things which can get you more range, but as well take away a bit of fun while riding…
Make sure your tires are inflated to the max rated pressure. Kick push when accelerating from stand still. Ride around 20km/h and don’t accelerate unnecessary. If you on the heavy side (which I guess no) losing some kilos would help too :joy:

I don’t think that the weight of the hubs does have a really big influence. I think what would play more into range is the contact area of the tire. Slimmer hubs can minimize that, but doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better for overall riding.

Thank you very much Andy, changing the battery to 12s won’t have any effect for your opinion ?

You can indeed get a max efficient setup if you get the voltage right to the motor kV and gearing. I think there is some literature about this to find here somewhere and in the vedder forum.
It’s out of my knowledge, so I don’t want to recommend you anything here.

Thanks.much appreciated.

I feel like the minor efficiency gains you’ll get from moving to 12s will be outweighed by the loss of 2 cells.

One option to increase the range would be to go to a 12s5p setup, it’s been done on the prototipo but it’s a pretty tight fit

It must be the he massive tyres if you have noticed a drop in your range.

I have the same tyres and meepo cyclone hubs, I weigh 94kg,
Have a 12s4p battery and get 15km!

The roads in the UK and even pavements are impossible to run urethane wheels where I live (and most places) some of the pot holes I still avoid even with the 165mm pneumatics!

I am starting to reach the limitations of where I can get to and back from with my range and am looking to get a bigger battery and enclosure eventually. I’d love 30km!

My fellow riders here are doing quite a lot, even 40km on a 12s setups. Yeah of course, there is this price I’m paying of these large contact path tires together with perhaps the weight of the hubs (not sure how much this affects it though). But 15km is relatively short IMO.

Yea I agree I was a little disappointed with my range. I’ve put it down to my inexperience of setting the board up and the tyres but I’m not 100% convinced on the provenance of the battery, but not confident enough to make any assertions about it.

lighter hubs and tires might get you extra 2km. But the main factor is rider’s weight. I get amazing range but i’m only 60kg.

Well, that’s a good insentive to lose weight

Hard to tell from pic but maybe a 14t pulley could help. Or more air in the tires.

how barely used is this pack? at two years old it could be showing its age. you should be getting more than 9 miles with this setup, even being 165 pounds, if your tires are fully inflated. The gearing seems correct for the size wheels you have, and the motor kv is a good match for it.

I get well over 40 miles on the 12S8P 40T I have on 8" tires at a very similar ratio and the same KV, I was around 160 when I was riding it all the time and getting that (I’ve since lost weight and get more than that now). At close to half of the battery capacity and same weight you should be getting about half that range if your tires are at max pressure.

When the new Molicel P45B cells drop you could consider getting a new battery for a few extra miles of range.

But for that same price you could just build/buy a range extender you’d attach to the middle of your board for days when you go on longer rides.

Even just 15 pounds can make a big difference which I’ve noticed while carrying my dog vs being alone. Although I also loose efficiency due to air drag when carrying her.

Bigger contact patch isn’t necessarily less rolling resistance and higher voltage isn’t necessarily going to increase range

The pack is been used say around 30 - 50 times in those 2 years. I also may add that it’s not fully balanced, it charges till around 95% so probably balancing it would increase range a little bit more.

at two years old and starting to come out of balance, the range issue is likely more the pack’s fault than anything else.
