A New Beginning | 002 MTB Esk8 Build

Well. It’s been just about 4 years since I built Soul Surfer, learned a lot through building my first esk8 and was quickly surprised how addicting it gets after completing a first build lol, just wanna keep building it up and upgrading parts to make it better and more powerful / enjoyable which right now I’ve hit a pretty good point, achieved my long time dream of converting it to a dual setup and just making it look badass which I’ve still got some upgrades for it in the future but this topic isn’t about that

This topic is about my second build which I’m stoked to be finalizing / starting to order the parts. It’s gonna be a off-road / street build with the MTB capabilities and prolly one of the cheapest builds I’m doing since I got alot of spare parts lying around from the first build (so I think it will be, I said the same about the first lol) but point is, I’m excited to start another esk8 project. I did makeup a parts list and kinda a sketch of how it’ll look

I don’t have anything ordered yet but once parts start coming in I’ll keep updating this topic with updates as I go along, I slacked on that with the first build but this time I’ll make sure of it. It’s exciting and I’m ready to use my skills that I learned on this build. If you guys got any recommendations on parts (especially tires cuz I got no idea where to look for those) or tips with making an MTB since this will be my first time, let me know

Channel trucks aren’t gonna work on a flat deck like that without some seriously angled baseplate adapters or angle brackets

It looks like it comes with the angle adapters, could always get more if it isn’t enough. Why does it need to be angled?

Traditional tkp and rkp baseplates will have that angle built in. Mountain board trucks like this are 0° degree (the angle comes from the tips of the deck instead).

0° trucks on a 0° tipped deck are very bad at turning. I made this mistake on my first build.

We’re talking like 20-30° angle, not a 5° wedge

To put it lightly lmao

There are some angled risers for channels on a flat deck for sale on the forum for $30 which is a steal. Part outs, new parts from projects, and miscellaneous

Oh ok, thanks for explaining it more into detail, I didnt think that would effect turning but it does make sense on why every mtb I see on the forum is angled like that, so you’re recommending I get a 20-30 degree angle riser?

That makes a lot more sense now lol

I would suggest using a different deck instead of wedge risers unless you’re just going for a light off road AT board. Having the ends kicked up makes it a little less likely to slam them into something. Also I’ve broken a couple decks with the risers, my brother broke one too. I think they put a little more stress on the deck.

More stress on the bolts, more height added to the whole ride, and you have to use twice the number of bolts.

@Red_souls it’s up to you entirely but I would go for a deck. Lots of people selling Haero bros. If you’re going to skin it, you could try reaching out to @tomiboi for blems. He makes some really sexy decks.

The builds more for dirt / gravel trails and street which isn’t going hard trailing or anything like that. I build boards from scratch so I can always add a mold to where the both ends kick up, I just need a measurement on each end so I got it exact and won’t have any issues, that sounds like the most doable solution is just building a deck that has the kick up ends

Ok so I’m staying away from the wedge risers and will make a deck that has the kick up ends, don’t need any problems happening

A deck with angled up ends is better it makes you lower inside of higher but fyi these wedges don’t put more stress on screws since it’s not using long screws through the whole thing but rather 2 sets.

Again I think a deck with angled tabs is a better option but for cost I made brackets that hold channel trucks at an angle from a flat deck but just past the ends of the deck rather than under so I can get as low as I want.

I’m going with making the board that both ends are up so it doesn’t cause any issues, I’m not sure what degree most mtb are tho so I can replicate the ends to match

Most are 30-35 degrees

Alright thank you

It’s popular to have a lower angle at the back and have 35/25 for example, it makes the front turn more than the back and helps stability.

Also know low angles will make the deck lean a lot for a little bit of turn and high angles will make the deck lean a little for a lot of turn.

So it pretty much just balances out, the back end being a lower angle and the front being a high angle, alright, I’ll keep that in mind when I make the deck, should I stick with the 35/25 or maybe do 30/20

If more offroad

If more on road

35 might be a hard angle to achieve if you’re making the deck with timber veneers. You can always add 5-10 degree angled risers
