A.F.M.B. Double Delta Build

Really wasn’t planning to build another one this year, but here we are, Another Fucking Mountain Board…

MBS Agent Deck with their comfy as hell agent grip pads

MBS XLs with their 9” tires and bindings

Radium 6495 @ 175kv from Madesk8

My SLM herringbone Beer Drives

Two things motivated me to build this thing. Pairing Double Deltas with an Agent Deck, and having a good platform to test the final version of the Beer Drives. Stoked on how both of them worked out.

I’m not even sure what version of these drives I’m on now. It’s taken a lot of trial and error. The last version was solid, other than where the truck clamp bolted to the gear housing. We ride though a lot of rocky areas and eventually those bolts would strip out after enough impacts. Enter the new truck clamp design.

It’s printed with Maraging Steel. Here’s a link to the product page if you’re curious. Maraging Steel - Material Guide | Craftcloud® . The herringbone gears are made from the same material. I won’t go into too much drive detail here because they will eventually get their own thread after my friend and I have put them through hell. His set should be here soon.

See above, they are super low profile similar to (and heavily inspired by) Apex Airs.

Below you can see the SLM aluminum push fit adapter designed for the Rockstar XL hubs. Zero hardware to the hub.

Here’s a shot of the gear housing being pulled away from the truck clamp. You can rotate it a bit to get different angles if wanted. The Double Deltas really only allow for this spot but it’s money.

Quick clip of them running on the bench.

Until today it’s just been a few street runs to test the drives. We got up early this morning and headed out to Point Sal, which has always been our proving ground for new builds due to the mix of terrain you get out there.

The goal was to test the drives on some rough terrain, but I did not mean to test them as hard as I did. There’s a gouge in the trail towards the beginning that you can try to jump over or slowly ride around. I chose the former and my 6:20am legs didn’t agree with that decision. Took the gear housing hard directly on to a rock. Motor was spinning and the wheel was not. Only thing that happened was the backlash adjustment doing its job and disengaging the motor gear from the driven. Gears still look new. Quick backlash adjustment and I was up and running again.

We made it to the beach for a spooky beer break.

Seeing the drives survive an impact like that was a major confidence boost so I really got to enjoy this thing on the way back. I swear the Double Deltas are like Dualities and Airs had an illegitimate love child and didn’t tell anyone. So divey and do a great job of dampening some of the rough trail. Turning radius is almost as tight as Dualities and you get all of the off road goodness that Airs offer. The longer Agent Deck with flared out spots for your feet give such a comfortable ride and let you really dig into those turns. I didn’t take it past 27mph but that’s fast on this ride and I really don’t creep much past 30 even on street unless I’m really feeling it. Tom doesn’t really advertise and I think that’s a big reason why his trucks aren’t seen in more builds.

Anyways, my garage is in shambles after building this and working on an unexpected plumping project. Time to drink more beer and get to work! Cheers :clinking_beer_mugs:

That is a great name. I’m surprised I had not thought of it…

Curious design feature with the pins on the clamp, i imagine those points would be under a lot of repetitive stress, will be interesting to see how they hold up!

I’d have personally made the clamp part with blind holes, and green loctited in tight fitting dowel pins, to achieve the same geometry. Interesting design, lets see if it holds up!

Following your gear drive progress closely friend. Wish you lived closer so we could offroad together.

That’s exactly what @BenjaminF suggested and it’s still a backup plan if the clamp fails. I decided to go this route for simplicity and to avoid renaming these to Ikea drives  . That impact I had yesterday morning was probably the hardest I’ve come down on a drive. Surviving it gives me hope that these may hold up. We’ll see!
