Im looking at a single motor build with a flipsky 7070. I wasn’t sure if it would be worth it to get an 18s capable vesc or stick with a 12. Thoughts?
What makes you want to do a single motor build? Especially with higher voltage, I think you would benefit a whole lot from dual motors.
I used to have a dual 6374 turnigy board which was great. I just didn’t need that much power. I thought I might get more range and save money on a single vesc
You aren’t going to get a significant boost to efficiency and 1wd handles significantly worse. The key to having 1wd suck less is very narrow trucks, as narrow as you can find. But then you’d be fighting wheelbite on most decks. I’d much rather do a 6355/6365 dual motor build than any single drive. If you are after efficiency go lower KV. A makerx dv4s is plenty to drive that at 12s, and reliable and cheap. Higher voltage isn’t going to increase efficiency either.
I agree with all this. If you stick with a single motor you’ll have all your torque on one side for acceleration and braking and the big complaint I hear about single motors is they initiate speed wobbles when braking. I think the best call would be the get dual small motors (6355 or smaller) and just don’t pump a lot of current to them.
With 2wd I could have amps on this part of the road well >100 per wheel, but at 1wd without the weight shift from accelerating this happens.
1wd is terrible for grip. I feel like it has less than half the grip of 2wd. Some common road surfaces were impossible at just a slight incline. I didn’t really feel torque steer, perhaps because of low angles but grip is even worse than you expect.
If you use smaller motors at lower kv, like 120kv 12s 6354 you have the same efficiency benefit of going from two large motors to one large motor.
Thanks, all. I’ll see how i like it, but it sounds like ill be getting another 7070.
7070s are also notoriously inefficient. You’d have been better off with a dual 5065 build if you wanted something light, lower power and efficient.

Why choose a single motor? In my opinion, using the 6384 dual motor is much better.
