3D printing design help?

Can anyone help me edit an STL file that knows what they’re doing?

I just need to cut it in half and mirror it.

What kind of a design is it, put a photo here my friend, may be I can help you

So its just @mmaner ‘s volt meter but with a few changes.

I just need to have the small wire opening on both sides instead of the one large one and I also need to fill the screw holes because I’ll be glueing the two parts together.

@huntercasillas I see, altering the design without the designers approval will not be ethical… its better to ask @mmaner first in this situation. I know him, is a good man, he will help you… Dont worry I can redesign that for you as the last option…

If that’s okay, let me know @mmaner! If not, a single piece design could be cool where I just slide the wires in the holes instead of having 2 pieces and then I can solder them to the voltage meter after.

Tinkercad.com is free in browser cad software that can make complex objects while still being extremely simple. You can learn to use it in minutes.

Just try that and see.

According to the Creative Commons license that file is under,

You are free to:

  • Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material
  • for any purpose, even commercially.

Under the following terms:

  • Attribution — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.

So no, it is not unethical to alter the design.

I did. I can’t figure out how to split existing STL objects exactly in half.

@huntercasillas Give me a minute, I’ll do it. Split down the middle and mirrored in which axis? Can you draw me a MSPaint diagram?

Measure the width of the dimension you want split.

Divide it by 2

Make a box that’s negative space or a “hole” that matches the dimension of the the number you got.

Use the align tool to align them

Use the group tool to turn it into 1 part

To mirror it:

Grab the an edge you want to be the mirroring line/axis

Slide it inwards towards the part and through the other side. You will just be inverting it.

Make sure the part is the same length as before and now its a perfect mirrored copy

no worries, ill get it done today sometime.

Is this what you want?

I dont see a need to split the model if your not using a charge port. You should be able to print it as is, add supports for the wire slots. After teh print is complete, remove the supports and slide the 2 wires through.

Yes! That’s exactly what I need! I guess if the wires I have are too thick after printing it I could just drill the hole a bit bigger right?

Good data here but either way, you can modify whatever you want, as long as you don’t sell it and claim it as your own

yeah, if its printed with extra walls. measure the wire diameter and Ill make the holes to fit, I did this one with a 1.75mm diameter as that’s what my pigtails are.

If your in the US I’ll print it for you, just pay the shipping. I can prolly do it tonight. PM me an address.

I’m not sure how to measure the diameter without a wire gage identifying chart with those holes in it, let me see if I have wire strippers with gage marks.

This is the wire I’m using:

VCE 2-Pack 2.1mm x 5.5mm DC Power Male to Female Adapter Extension Cable for 12V CCTV Wireless IP Camera, LED, Car-3FT https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CGLWWJN/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_2nCoDbMQ4N4GW

the wire is 1.75mm diameter, it in the reviews.
