36T or 40T Wheel Pulley? Dual 270KV 10S 83mm Wheels

Hi esk8.news crew!

I am debating whether to get 36T or 40T wheel pulleys for my dual 270KV 5055 10S 83mm short board setup.

I have 12T and 13T motor pulleys. What do you guys think? Is 36T or 40T better given then 83mm wheel size and dual 270KV 5055 motors.

Your thoughts and opinions are greatly valued.

Have you purchased those motors already? 270kv is a lot, you need a high quality ESC to handle that.

I got belt slippage on 14T, so 12T and 13T seem like obvious no-noes.

On 83mm wheels a 40T pulley will be very close to the ground, which is bad.

If I were you, I would swap motors, going to run into issues no matter what you do otherwise.

40t will be too big if we’re taking about 5m I run a 36t 5m pulley on my 80mm kegels and it’s pretty close to the ground

Agreed OP, your build either won’t last long with 10s 270kv or you won’t be able to enjoy it because of the slippage.

What I used to do when I was learning what components go together is I would visit a website of a well known esk8 vendor ( @torqueboards , @longhairedboy , etc) and see what options they offer.

Once you know the specs, find the parts yourself at the prices you can afford, and then bam. Youre golden.

People tend to stick with HTD5M as the tooth profile for pulleys, but if you want to use small wheels HDT3M (with the proper mount and aftercare*) is also a good alternative

* Most issues lie in the belt tension, overtime the motor will need to be readjusted to keep tension. This can be avoided either with Idlers or a specially designed motor mount (Boosted boards)

Just keep in mind you can’t mix and match. That’s just gonna result in a slippery mess of a drivetrain

Pulleys are not your problem, motor KV is.

Thanks guys. I know my motor isn’t ideal for my battery, but I should mention that I am running a non-VESC dual-ESC from dickyho and I will be using these motors with idlers. These ESCs don’t do a bad job running the high KV motors.

In fact, I was previously running a 13T/35T setup and it was a good balance of torque/hp. It sounds like 36T is my best bet with the wheel size I am running. At the moment these are the motors I have and I would prefer not to go up in wheel size.

Maybe I will just pick up a pair of 180KV or 170KV 5055/5065/6364 motors as well. I eventually do want to upgrade to VESC and will need the lower KV motors once I do.

If you’re stuck with 270kv I’d get 32t pulleys. If that’s not an option, the lowest tooth count you can get.

I ran my Diyeboards kit with 13t/40t on 90 mm and it was ok. Same motors I think. So if you are limited to these options go 36t.

Alright, I’ve settled on 2x 6354s for my dual belt setup. But I’m on the fence between a 170KV or 200KV.

This is for a short board with 83mm wheels. I live in an area with hills so torque is important, and a lower top speed isn’t a major concern.

  • 2x 6354 170KV with 16/36 gearing
  • 2x 6354 200KV with 15/36 gearing

Which do you think would be better on this setup?

Haha yeah, I did go in a bit of a circle on this one. I figured since I’m already buying new mounts and 10” Calibers, I might as well get new motors too.
