Hi everyone,
I’m starting my first serious VESC-based rebuild on my daily electric scooter, after multiple failures of the stock electronics (latest one almost caused a fire).
Stock setup
72V (20S8P) LG M50LT, 40Ah, BMS 100A
2× 60H motors 17x2 , 1500W nominal
Stock sinewave controllers: 50A battery / 200A phasC
I want a reliable working daily setup without jumping straight to very expensive high-end ESCs. My budget is not high, around 250 or maybe a bit more for exceptional product/price
ESCs I’m considering
MakerX
Go-FOC D100S 285USD
Go-FOC S100 X 2 330USD
MakerX advised that although these are rated for ~200A phase on paper, they may overheat under sustained load, more rated for 200Apc for 3S,recommending a G300S instead (over budget).
Spintend with no limit fw
Single Ubox 100v 100A (2 x units :165USD ) but lot of bad reviews.. for my use maybe it’s ok
Single Ubox Alu Lite 100V 100A (178USD 2X units)
Dual Ubox Aluminium Lite 100V 100A (191USD)
Spintend Ubox 85V 150A models (301USD 2x units)
(considering Unlimited firmware)
Spintend chat mentioned the 100A models won’t exceed ~120A phase even with Unlimited FW, and the 85V 150A models may top out around ~180A peak.><““
I understand thermal limits and I’m willing to add extra cooling (copper heatsinks, water cooling, forced ac, copper radia), but I know cooling won’t change internal silicon limits.
Main questions
Are budget VESCs Spintend actually reliable for daily riding? And for later upgrades
Can Spintend Ubox ESCs realistically replace 200A phase stock controllers without frying
Is it better to invest in a stronger ESC instead of pushing cooling mods? I mean the 85v 150v budget is overlimit for me as well
I plan to ride daily with conservative settings, and later aim for electric scooter racing, hoping for having days
Any honest feedback from experienced VESC users would help a lot. Thanks! ![]()
