20s Little FOCers on stooge SRB v5#1

Primary side shows stats for both sides, so not much reason to set that for the secondary side.

How is primary side determined?

you’ll note in these two examples, wattage is 4k/side. if primary were showing stats for both then one side should be 8k, and the other 4k no?

also the two sides distances are just off by the gear ratio difference that was misconfigured.
2797/4.33*14.33 = 9256.584 so the distance stat also isn’t reported for both sides by a ā€œprimaryā€

so i don’t think this example shows a primary showing data for both sides.

but i do find this confusing:

so i feel like there must be some way vesc_tool reports for multiple ESCs combined.

The side with the Bluetooth module, only that side will be populated with gear ratio etc. after detection.

For me it always shows total board power, not per side.
Highest I’ve seen is 5500w, and there’s no way I’m doing double that on a 12s board with constantly overheating motors

Why you got to @ me like this :joy:

I’ve got vesc tool app screenshots from after racing Ankle Wreacher, and all four esc report a max power of 8~9kW, but each of the exact reported powers are different by a few hundred Watts.
If it was reporting the total of all four VESC’s shouldn’t these numbers be the same?
But I also don’t think I was pulling 32kW…

Sunday 2023-10-15 Intro2Speed

We got a bigger track. and it was hot out.

harder pulls

I pulled harder but stil peaked only a combined 273 motor amps. didn’t bump against the 150A/side

feels good. v5#3 still feels more punch. not sure why if i wasn’t hitting these limits, feels like i didn’t ask it for more.

was too hot, and the day got away from me, and I only did track riding no specific drag. before breaking things… ( see below. )

motor temps and iron losses.

Motor temps got up there on this bigger track and a hotter day, 80c - 99c
ESCs seemed to do ok. peaking 60c

also peaking 71 wh/mi

So #1 yes. and #2 yes.

and achievement unlocked.

I should do @Skyart’s no load test on bench.

best laps

v5#1 didn’t get a chance at more warmed up laps. but initially it had top spot vs v5#3

fess v5#1 (vesc) fess v5#3 (castle) @Ruxx v5#10 (castle) @MetroLinkX4 (ron) v5#8 (awd vesc)
53.04s 51.19s 49.80s 50.74s

oops i broke it

So i received the board with the ESCs temporarily mounted with dual lock velcro and a strap rear around the foot stop. I told myself once i got it going i’d come back and mount it with bolts. I kept kicking the strap off so from the very beginning of this thread i’ve been running without it. and everything was ā€œfineā€

then promptly forgot to get back to mounting things with bolts.

until. i took this thing up the dam wall. and… had to coast down. dragging some clanky metal. behind me.

No @MoeStooge gears were harmed in the eating of this heatsink.

Suprisingly. I plugged everythign back together. and it all continues to work. yay.

@DEEIF’s didn’t seem happy. xD said ā€œthat’s what the strap was forā€.

makes sense.

sry @DEEIF will make it up to you somehow.

so… i have uart enabled on one side, and uart + ppm enabled on the other.

perhaps the switch is wether uart is enabled or not? this deserves some experimentation.

as @tuckjohn notes he’s got more evidence of it not being combined. and being per vesc.

hmm.

forgot to do this section:

Remote / Throttle

dead band

This took a crap load of getting used to. I almost threw myself off a few times coming out of a corner and reengaging the throttle. definitely had some muscle memory. also the castle deadband must be closer to 15% as well.

switching

my first bunch of laps got me dialed in on v5#1 (vesc)

I actually then felt very uncomfortable switching back to v5#3 (castle) throwing my balance off in corners till i adapted again.

So… I really think Familiarity Bias is a huge thing when trying to compare these two things.

Dang Fess - you might just be pushing it mega hard and bumping up against the limits of using outrunners. I don’t ride like you guys so I’m not going to be helpful with testing here.

What kind of efficiency and temps do the 8s inrunner setups see?

Another interesting setup would be VESC paired with 8s battery and inrunners, although I’m not sure what VESC based ESC would push enough amps for your needs.

Basically is

I could be wrong, but I don’t think The castle keeps an rpm counter. so can’t calc distance, can’t calc effeciency.

the castle 2028 motors were getting too hot and physically failing. though I never personally caught a measurement more than 85c with temp sensors or temp gun. ( 3 failures identified. wave washer getting crushed turning into shrapnel might be force not heat, melting phases, and ungluing stator from can. )
only myself @MarioChacon and @Mbrady getting them that hot.

The now larger hobywing 70125s i’m using i haven’t managed to get above 50c. (external temp gun, temp sensors aren’t working)

could maybe get up to 12s with 10t/78T gearing and the 70125 hobbywing motors. and still be reasonable. (though i really wanted to leave those 10T gears behind they wear fast. )

Then a pair of go-foc 300s at 12s could deliver the watts? they might be able to do it at 8s even. which would help gearing.

Saturday update

no saturday update. I rode the proto.

Sorry if off topic but curious about a 4wd castle setup. Is there a smaller 800kv combo than 2028’s that would be suitable?

Big $$$$

Could you go back to 2wd though?

2wd will always feel watery after you’ve properly experienced 4wd

Yeah for racing I don’t think I could go back. All those times you get on it a touch too early out of a corner and the front wheels pull the board around for you is just :ok_hand:.

All the smaller inrunners I see are higher kv though.

Maybe if it was an SRB V5. They still have more power than my 4wd!

Wed, Sunday updates
