13s+ discussion

With new ESC capable of voltages greater than 50.4v entering the market let’s have a discussion on the benefits and challenges.

My dick gets bigger with every volt over 50 :eggplant::eggplant::eggplant::eggplant:

@wandagoner you were a bit speedier than me

Ill just add this:

In light of the newly developed Lacroix Stormcore which can run up to 100V I was interested to hear your opinions on a system which runs at these higher voltages. E.g. the Pros and Cons, experiences, tips on building such a setup etc.

I think this thread would be beneficial for people to share their opinions and also for people who are unexperienced with a 13-20S system and want to get an impression of the possibilities.

Big shoutout to @Arch, @Deodand, @Blasto and @sofu. Im sure they layed a base for some amazing monster builds.

Additionally, if im correct @jeffwuneo will also come out with a 20S ESC in the future.

I feel even Skatan himself will fear what will be spawned into the esk8 world in the coming months

Worth looking into the “high voltage directive”
(I may have just made that up…)
But at a certain voltage, certainly over here, things get more involved.
Edit. Definitely made some of that up.

While its certainly intresting for e-carts, e-bikes and the avrage electrified sofa/couch. I’m going to be a hype killer and say that 20S is overkill for en esk8. (for boards not intended to go 100km/h)

  • Every single part of the build will get more expensive
  • more losses on lower voltages(due to Ron on fets beeing higher since higher voltage tolerance)
  • huuge battery pack(20S4P?? If even 4P suffices…)
  • add more stuff

It is a thing, and its starts past 30V AC or 50VDC (if we talking automotive)
In power appliances HV is 1000V+.

Pros:

  • Faster charge time
  • Can use thinner cables
  • Can use less nickel in series connections (less current (Amp) will go through for same power (Watt) output. You’ll most likely end up using more nickel strip in total tho.
  • Less heat being generated in the same wires used for 12s with same power output (less current in the same size wire=less heat)
  • Faster balance time

Cons:

  • Worse outcome if shit happens while you build the pack
  • More balance wires

Please correct me if I’m saying wrong things…

When does DC voltage start to get dangerous heard some efoil guys have been zapped.

the nickel for 20S vs 12S will be alot more (unless you refering thickness of the parallell grp only)
The heat on the ESC dsn’t neacesarily get better. Higher Ron leads to biggers losses, its a trade off for higher voltage there. Motor might run cooler tho.

What motors can we use 80100+?

I’m the UK British standards BS7671 wiring regulations ELV (extra low voltage) is 50v AC, 120V DC or below

So as fare as I’m concerned we still in the safe part of not needing PATesting or other extra measures yet

I was referring to series connections, since that’s where all the current goes through. Just specified it

I was referring to the actual wires.

Will go back and specifi things.

Thanks for pointing them out

Motors are typically bottlenecked by current not voltage. Meaning the avrage esk8 motor will do just fine on 20S. The problems start to surface if voltage is high enough to arc between the windings in the motor or if the motor can’t handle the mechanical stress from higher RPM that the higher voltage will produce.

Yes, the limits differs between countries abit. But its usually round those numbers

Timing is perfect I just ordered 100× vtc6 was meant to be for 2 packs but a 20S5P could be fun to do.

EUCs already run on 24s so I was waiting for this to happen to eskate aswell

With 20S battery speed bumps are not going to be your friend. I am not keen on trampa style lunchbox.

Why I stated we’re I’m from and what standards I was using

My conserm is what will the aceliration low end be like surly it going to make that worse

POS I’m guessing volt drop/sag

That 20S battery box will weigh so much the speedbumps flattens
