VESC Labs - New VESCS From Benjamin Vedder

This makes way too much sense how am I supposed to be outraged

Benjamin has made a couple nice new videos showing the new duet/stormcore v2. Finding good people to design stuff with really pays. Really proud of this one, teamwork makes the dreamwork and all that.

Conisdering the yields we are getting in manufacturing I am pretty sure the reliability of this one is going to be unparalleled over the previous versions. Which in my book is probably the biggest upgrade of all.

Care to share details on the difference between this and the LaCroix 100D2 that was never released?

Hey I’m dumb everyone just watch the video

built in ESP32??? HELL YEAH

those fets look expensive :eyes:

We made the 100Dx which I’m pretty sure was released, that was the gold colored one. After that I designed a mini 60V stormcore which I am honestly not sure if it made it to release or not. But other than that nothing was ever really in the works. This came about when the new Lacroix owners approached me to improve the reliability and performance of their ESC and we found a constellation to make that happen. They have been great to work with and I think this ESC will do nicely for them.

TLDW of video:

  • Single large TOLL mosfet instead of 3 parallel 5x6 FETs, massively increased current throughput and stability
  • ESP32 Instead of NRF so you can now connect via WiFi and in the future this should be a very reliable remote reciever
  • UART port on side leads to ESP32 for easy connect of external GPS
  • Improved current shunt amplification and better buck regulator makes for cleaner measurements and improved HFI

I was asking about the black one you sent me years ago to test. Was a decent chunk of time before the Dx. You told me and @Brently not to run them at 20S and we did anyways, remember?

I think that was the Dx prototype but memory is not that good haha.

Stormcore 100D+ is what it was I had one aswell but somehow ble and programming was fucked with it so it went to the grave :man_shrugging:

Oh yeah that’s the name, the D100+

Still the most reliable VESC ESC I’ve ever used

Oh ya, I think that one was still using that DRV8353 chip which was very inconsistent across batches, so some would work great endlessly and then the next batch not as much. And I think those also had some more expensive MOSFETs.

How does it handles free spin at high voltage? Ik that most people nowaday doesn’t do that cause it can pop the controller.

Congrats @Deodand, Vedder, and team on the progress.

thanks for stopping in again @Deodand and giving us the info.

Oh yeah id also like to know this. My best guess is less than perfect motor detection parameters

Yeah, cause for those of us that don’t have a Dyno. Free spin is the only way to know how it might behave at high speed/max duty cycle. Last time I free spin a board was a 12s build with a DV6.

This doesn’t make sense. A BMS cutting out during regen causes a voltage spike on the motor controller, which is worse, not better.

Thnx for pointing out! It was a typo, he said ‘‘the BMS is guaranteed not to suddenly cut out under regen’’

please make the process for downloading the tool correctly less painful.

For those interested I think thats what nearly every comparable VESC does, and they look like IPT015N10N5 from the video. A little more resistance but less gate charge than HYG015N10NS1TA (used in D100S and flipsky iirc) and very similar specs to JMSH1001ATL (Spintend) granted I am very much not an expert.

Examples

Spintend 85250, 85150, 100v100a, every dual ubox

MakerX D100S front/back, G300

Flipsky 75200, 75100 (same for dual)

This is really exciting. Are you aware of any US vendors planning to stock and sell these?

Edit - Never mind, the Stormcore 2.0 is now available. Looks like 4mm bullets on the Stormcore version.

The Windows VESC Tool has been updated, but the MacOS version is still pretty ancient. Is it going to get updated?

They’re both still pretty tempermental with Bluetooth connections…
