What’s the smallest possible motor pinion tooth count for this drive 13t?

Thinking how the 88t straight cut might help with reducing RPM and giving a bit more torque

gonna hope I can either find a moderately robust low tooth count motor pinion or make one myself..

17T is the minimum. And if you go any smaller it wouldn’t be robust.

One more set for me, sent a telegram dm

Kevin made a very small batch of 16t mod1 pinions. He specifically clocked the keyway so it aligned between two teeth, to maximize the cross section. He also added a collar top and bottom of the teeth to add strength.

At the same time, he made a batch of 89t wheel gears which he said are the largest possible to fit in the housings.

I’ve been using my set of 16:89 gears for a couple years now on Mistfall. They’ve been hauling my 300lb ass around, taking 4000W each, without issue. Opened the drives up recently and there was no sign of failure or significant tooth wear.

So I’d say, with all those added considerations, that 16t is the smallest mod1 pinion that can be made for an 8mm shaft with a keyway.

I broke half a teeth off a 17T BN pinion from just racing (the drive didn’t see any shock loads, no jumping and landing with throttle, etc).

Though I’ve been running 200A at 175KV, so pretty good torque, and been hitting that fairly consistently. As much as I love the sound of mod1, the raceboard for me has to stay on a higher modulus for reliability. Now I’m having wear issues with really good quality mod1.5 pinions. Even considering trying mod2 for the next revision to get it literally bulletproof (and to be able to potentially machine gears inhouse and send out just for professional hardening!)

I have a design in mind for a 15T keyed mod1 pinion

If you are seriously considering ordering these and haven’t paid me yet please speak up because I think I could add some more to the order tonight. Best we order these extra ASAP because of the incoming tariffs and also saving on shipping

If I do decide to front and buy extra inventory myself I’m going to tell you guys all right now I’m adding $50 to the price for a set lol so buy now to save

I just looked this up. In a word. Gross; That puts a pretty painful knife in many ongoing plans. My concern (and perhaps incomplete understanding) is that tariffs are applied at the date of entry. So that cools my jets on a number of things. :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

I have a set of (unused) helicals but its only a 2wd set, and having gone to 4wd I have zero interest to go back especially with snow just around the corner. Alas they’ll continue to collect dust for the time being.

what’s the largest that fits?

I have 17T/65T for 3.82 gear ratio on my BN.
i’m now wondering why kevin didn’t chose a bigger pinion instead of the smaller wheel gear.

I think it’s either 21T or 23T? Not sure.

hmm i bet it’s 23/88 and somehow I got confused. been so long since i had them open. the only record i have is kev saying 3.82. damn I don’t want to open them. but tempting to get more gears in this buy. (mine are already straight cut)

Given the pretty short motor adjustment range, I’d think all the ratios use the same wheel gear

mine is a straight 23/88, might need new ones soon
