Correct. The problem is that you have to go through customs clearance now and that’s a real PITA. I would much rather pay the extra 1% on VAT.
If they require me to go there physically that would mean I’d have to drive 20km each way with public transport. That would indeed suck.
I imagine a lot of very flustered looking people making last minute decisions while only half knowing what they were doing having been given a quick brief 5 minutes earlier.
Yet another tax from conservatives
I wonder how much tax they actually get from these sellers, probably 10 percent more profit for the Chinese
Honestly politicians just haven’t got a clue
Nope, your currier will sort that out. You pay the VAT to your currier, they deliver as usual.
Yep UPS does that for you, you just need to pay more or less depending on what they charge you. I remember my 150€ order where I needed to pay 130€ in shipping and fees to UPS… good times…
There’s a saying in the US. “If you’re young and not a democrat you don’t have a heart, if you’re old and not a republican you don’t have a brain…”
The more you’re involved with running a business, BS like these VAT’s make the side saying “keep government out of your life” look very attractive… The side saying “the government will take care of you” look like a bunch of crooked liars…
Only UPS does that though. DHL only on special occasions, everything else gets delivered to your local customs office.
As an American I’m a bit confused on what exactly is vat besides just more bullshit taxes, like is there a specific reason for them or is it just a fuck you give me money tax?
Its sales tax. In the US its ~7-9% depending on the state and some states don’t have it. In Europe its 19-25%, more on luxury goods.
In Denmark, someone earning just ~$100k USD could be taxed 90% on some items in total.
That’s a stupid high tax rate
Their base income tax is like 50% above just ~60k band, so with for example sales tax + luxury tax + tariffs it can add up to buying a $100 item means you need to earn $1000 more
yea, but that only concern customer in the EU countries. outside of EU, nothing has changed
as i live in 0% VAT country, i will happily pay my 0% import tax
Correct. This really isn’t too much of a big deal as a buyer. It’s as a seller that it’s a pain.
If only that were true.
UPS will also charge you brokerage fees which are rarely below 70€ even for 30€ items.
Then you will have to pay VAT + import tax which are calculated on the value of the item incl. shipping.
At least for me purchasing from the UK is no longer an option in most cases.
To be fair: yes there are different laws and you need papers to be done, BUT normally the stuff is automatic or guided and easy, WHEN shit is ready. P.e. trucks running in or through Switzerland need papers and stuff doesn’t take long.
Right now UK needs to get stuff sorted like this. This is one of the consequences of Brexit
About law: I‘m happy we have an awesome political situation with 7 people on top (and not one of them is a total fool). As a citizen we are able to bring a new law.
There is no import tax for goods from the UK. It’s only for goods that are sold via the UK but that do not come from the UK. Clothing for example. In that case the EU puts import tax onto the goods.
If you buy UK made goods, it’s only VAT and UPS doesn’t charge crazy fees for VAT handling. In our case the recent price drop we implemented will cover those fees easily.
I just had to pay 50 euro vat on a trampa order.
I think it’s pretty tragic
Before Brexit the VAT was included in the price (for European customers). Now it isn’t. The balance is the same. -50 +50= 0
Depends on EU country but I think it’s VAT + Import (Custom) Fees as UK now it’s 3rd party country
