Mountain board urban carvers vs "traditional" AT boards

I’ve been noticing this. And it seems to be a split between prebuilts, completes and newbie builders as opposed to forum people, enthusiasts and people from countries it’s illegal to skate on roads.

Popularized by evolve, the “DKP AT” seems to be copied by many prebuilt manufacturers and built by many builders that use kits or AliExpress exclusives.

Popularized by the UK mountainboard crowd, the off road/urban carver and heavy use of mountainboard components seems to be mostly used by enthusiasts and anyone who can’t ride on sidewalks or roads.

Just an observation, I have no idea what’s actually going on.

Personally I believe wheel choice isn’t what makes a board AT or street, at least it’s not the only thing. And DKP fucking sucks at speed.

I can settle that one for you: no, you won’t.

The thing I love about dkp’s though is that you can go relatively slow and have loads of fun. They’re my truck of choice for a chill cruise. You can play with all of the little details on your path that you normally go charging past on channels.

I’ve just acquired myself a set of SR TKPs, my first TKPs since I was in short trousers. Looking forward to seeing how they compare.

I ride a Flux urban carver on 8" pneumies and an Onsra BC2 DD on TB110’s. I guess you can slap some smaller pneumies on an Onsra type deck, but I generally don’t like the look and on DKP’s you prolly wont be doing any AT riding.

Do you like the Wowgo AT2 as a platform? If the enclosure size suits you, a competent city board can be made from it.

I rode an evolve bamboo GT for a while. (AT board)
I also own a Kaly (carver) and have tons of DIY that are full emtb.

I would take a step back on ask yourself what you really want to do.

“AT Boards” really don’t excel at going off road for example.
They are generally the lightest / smallest of the 3 type of setup here.
Awesome for urban setting.

“emtb” to clarify the definition here a little I won’t call a board a mountainboard unless bindings and top mount. The bindings gives you a bunch of advantages over a carver. You can turn harder, easier to jump the board, they give me alot more confidence when riding. Top mounted electronics and batteries gives you significantly more clearance. Negatives - when you fall with bindings it hurts… always safety gear, you can’t bail. One can argue top mounted don’t look as stealthy / nice. If you want to go offroad this setup probably will servce you best.

I feel like being a mountainboard also precludes the use of DKP and TKP, I’ve only ever known people to use RKP/PKP/Channel with a mountainboard depending on rake/pivot preferences

I have yet so see any reason for dkp to be better unless you only ride at low speeds.

They’re not made for high speed at all. Especially not the speeds we hit. Imagine a downhill rider on dkp’s, they’d quite possibly die.
I don’t like them, too much ride height for me, but they can be fun. Especially on drop through longboards.

I like them on low power flexy decks for relaxed casual city cruising. Good for busy areas with slow traffic and tight corners like a downtown core of a city.

Mind you most of us in esk8 like to go fast or offroad, so for most people, DKP sucks.

This would not be hard to do. You just need a different baseplate. Would be perfect for a road specific mountain board.
