Hub Motor / Direct Drive Axle Stress Safety Discussion

I don’t really give a knobhole about this whole argument because 12mm axles don’t snap and this has been resolved.

I would however like you to stop calling wheel “tires”. Help me lawd.

I don’t think there’s any consensus on whether a 12 mm axle needs to go all the way through or not. It sounded a lot like @dani said it doesn’t…? I’d like to see the simulations behind this…

This thread was very enlightening. I learned so much.

First thing anyone have to do before start throwing math around is to make a free body diagram of the loading scenario, without it it’s really easy to misunderstand

Wont change the fact the guy has no real world experience and yet is all knowing over actual creators.
It’s like you coming to my woodshop and telling me how to cut my planks.

Agree completely, just saying that any mechanical problem you want to solve for stresses you need to have a clear picture of what is going on before doing any calculations

@Flasher I posted my real world experience in the other thead before all the safety posts were deleted. @evoheyax

Cut the crap. You have no esk8 building experience. You built one bike. One. And it had to be completely gutted to become useable. Show me your DIY skills and real life building skills (esk8 ofcourse) and then, you might have more people actually reading rather than just scrolling through your replies

irrelevant - and no it wasnt necessary to gut it, it ran 40mph at 72v just fine

who do you think @hummieee used to text multiple times per week asking advice and bouncing motor ideas throughout nearly his entire development effort? hmm? PM if you want numerous examples of this.

You’re absolutely right. It’s irrelevant to say that someone with no building skills can start telling others that they will fail their builds. In example, come to my shop and tell me one of my machines can kill me. This is why you are not building anything. You follow your numbers too closely rather than trial and error to succeed

So…you’re gonna shitpost people for no longer wanting your help?

this thread is not about any vendor in particular - it is a safety resource for future direct drive makers to avoid mistakes of the past that resulted in harm to forum members.

Now that the Kickstarter is done and no one can back out anymore I’m done with decorum. Fuck off Devin. Don’t call on me here or anywhere else.

Technically its devin but thats just semantics

quick summary: @hummieee says aluminum axle “showed badly” “no matter how big it got” in testing but @dani are you of the opinion its ok if it’s 3x thicker than a 12mm steel axle despite aluminum’s lack of a fatigue / endurance limit?
