Do you use retaining compound in conjunction with the set screw? Also curious what bore set screw you put in.

Also since it’s their thread I’ll mention @SirVesa has been helping me with advice setting up a chain drive which I really appreciate, although getting at set of the SLM system made is on the back burner for now.

Yeah. I will use Loctite and try to jam the set screw into the shaft groove.

A keyway would be certainly more robust.

But I have gotten by without one in many set ups.

If I find it I will use 648, but most times I just use regular red loctite because it’s always handy.

Cool, so sounds like you find red loctite burns off OK when you have to remove parts?

Yeah.

Removing motor pulleys is always an adventure.

But I use a little propane torch and a few different pullers to make it work ok.

I always use Red loctite on stuff like motor mounts too.

While we are at it, everyone dealing with these things should use the Wera Hex plus hex set.

It really helps not strip bolts.

Ah I see - good recs! - I’ve been using mainly blue loctite or sometimes green retaining compound, I figured red would be too permanent but I’ve never tried to remove it from any of the things I’ve used it for.

I need to look for that last style pulley puller, or if you have a link - I need one that can clamp to the can like that.

A torch and windshield wiper pulley work pretty well. Cheap at any local auto parts store.

My problem with the wiper pulley was that it only gets the gear like 80% of the way off and I usually have to grind down the threads on the awl to get it to fit inside the 10mm shaft hole.

I got this style and it’s almost perfect but the teeth are thick and it could be a problem if you don’t have enough gap between pulley and can to slip them in

That’s my current system - but sometimes I don’t have enough gap to get it under the pulley, so I just pry it with a big flat screwdriver a bit first. Not a big deal but inelegant ha. Always torch heat it up until smoking first tho.

Haha yeah I usually have to do the same thing. @Venom121212 The swivel tip broke off the front of the puller so now it fits inside the motor pinion a few mm. It lets me get the pinion off the shaft a little further before switching to other methods. It definitely doesn’t take it all the way off though.

The crazy thing is I end up finding situations to use all 3 so I can’t give you a definite one to choose. Maybe the red box kit covers the most.

Yesterday I stuck a little bolt in the hole to get all the way out. I’m going to find pins of a better size for the future.

I’ve only ever used this guy and/or 1 or 2 big flat head screwdrivers… torch it, jimmy it off most of the way and then grab it with a pair of multigrips so you don’t burn your digits and bob’s your aunty
