Okay, update:
The motor turns by hand much more easily when not mounted so I don’t know how much of the friction is internal or external. There’s still a fair bit of shavings in there so I started removing screws. Got stuck on two of the Philips screws around the sides and now they’re stripped. The rest came out with a little bit of effort because of the loctite on them.
I did what I could using isopropanol, qtips and toothpicks. I could still try compressed air tomorrow at work but I’m not sure how to get those last screws out without damaging the can. I tried the rubber-band trick, and plain old strength and pressure, not sure what else to do here.
By the way, here’s what a drive gear “milled” by friction with the mount looks like:
I’ve used the “Poster Tack, and Blu-Tack” on innumerable motors! Mostly from ferritic sand and not from putting iron filings in my motors.
Check Dollar Stores they often have it.
Plus high-pressure air, and electrical contact cleaner, these last two items just move around the iron filings so you can get the crap out with the Blu_tack
I had to solve the ferrous debris problem last night, I used a toothbrush to get all the fillings to the front then made a ring of hot glue around the front of the magnets to capture the fillings then pulled it off once cooled. Did this a couple times got almost all debris off.
