CarvePDX 2026 - June 26-28th - Portland, OR

I went to my first (and only) CarvePDX in 2023 as a pretty novice rider. It didn’t seem like the organizers had an issue with slow riders.

I spent that weekend riding my Tabor for the first time, and while I was slow, I didn’t get left behind. I don’t see why you’re acting like the organizers don’t accommodate all speeds at the event, they did for me at least.

I’d say it’s more than that: it’s service, leadership, and care.

Back when I first got interested in motorcycling (late ‘90s) I ran across someone on the internet opining that riding “drag” was the most important role and should be done by the most experienced riders who had the skill and capacity to watch out for everyone, keep an eye out for concerning vehicles coming up behind the group, and generally catch issues before they turned into problems. Never went on any group rides (MC wasn’t for me) but that perspective stuck, and has informed a lot of how I’ve tried to carry myself as I move through the world in general.

I’m pretty happy at 15, I’ve recently been telling people that esk8ing is the most fun you can possibly have at 15mph.

I’ll go up to about 18, but I ride basically with no gear other than my (bike) helmet so I’d prefer not to do anything I can’t run off.

which brings up my age - 63 - which means every year I can run off a little less

But I do appreciate all your guys support, I’m feeling the love

I appreciate the pushback. It’s not that they won’t do it, but I feel as though they shouldn’t have to. It’s like taking a Corolla to the race track. Sure, people will let me run it but it gets in the way of them having an earnestly good time at the speeds they want to go, not the speed I’m forcing them to go.

The best solution is to have levels but this requires more ride leaders and more sweeps and a lot more organizing. I suspect as the event gets larger that’s the way it will go.

I see what you’re saying about Corolla on a track. I still think you should come out. Ride the pace that feels right for you, I’m sure there’ll be folks that also feel the same way and ride at similar pace.

I totally agree more ride leaders and more sweeps are necessary. I’m not officially part of planning CarvePDX, but I’d happily serve as sweep for a couple of the rides, I do in NYC as it is. Hope to see you at the event man.

Funny story appropos of nothing, I swept a skateboard (kickboard) race one time on my esk8, this was when they were still pretty novel. Anyway, the last person in the race was just kicking along everyone else had long gone and she hit a pine cone and crashed (Is “took a spill” still a thing?)

So she decided to walk the rest of the race. So my job as a sweep was to cover the entire course at about 1.5 mph

I’ve had my board up to 18 on the remote, but I think it’s using Canadian miles, because it’s 15% high relative to GPS. That would put it at 15 exactly, plenty fast for me. In practice, with stops to let my feet stop cramping, I can cover about 8 miles in an hour :joy:

(Edit: 15.8 mph. Never trust me to do arithmetic. Advanced object-oriented programming, no problem, but just make me use the calculator.)

@DougM IMHO you should go…

  • We, as a community, need slower rider representation
  • You shouldn’t miss out on the fun
  • We don’t want to miss you
  • PDX is typically a slower pace vs SEA
  • Don’t make me get AI to write a bunch…
