Anything Direct Drive related (SERIOUS)

This is terrible news Ricardo. Back in the day @BillGordon was a bit of an elofty aficionado so he may be able to offer you support.

Still have to take the screws from the back and check the other bearing, but the outer bearing looks ok, and so do the magnets. Watch this space.

Maaaan, I’ve never ridden anything better than this board when it was working :disappointed_relieved:

When you’ve got the end off the drive the can has nothing to centre it so will be pulled to the magnets I’m guessing. Not necessarily out of line.
There’s info somewhere I think on the elofty thread on how to do a complete teardown of these. Did you find that?

Yeah, you’re probably right. Really need to complete the inspection to be able to draw any conclusions.

I saw the guide, but the tiny screws are a bitch to get out (had to drill two of these out so far) and so far have been unable to get the motor out of the axle…

Hopefully today I’ll manage!

Watch out for the tiny bits of swarf from drilling out any screws jumping into the magnets…
Good luck!

@hummieee does this winding look normal to you?

When rotating the can it looks like the wire is caught slightly so I’m thinking that may be the issue?

I might just be talking bollocks because I don’t know anything about stators, so any help it deeply appreciated!

I think I found the culprit :rage:

Is this salvageable or is this garbage?

Heyyy didnt @ApexBoards make this one for you? Maybe they know about it?

Oh i see you found the failure, mbmb hmmm looks fixable maybe, but not an easy one i bet.

Yeah, but they are not at fault. @ApexBoards did a brilliant job (loved every second of riding this board, best thing ever!), but unfortunately Elofty let the side down…

I souced the motors myself btw!

Maybe add nail polish to the wire and push it back in place?
Dunno if it would hold the heat TBH

Thats a feelsbad man, thar board looks cool af!

@Ricardo: I feel your pain. When my TB DDs are working they are incredible. However, I have replaced 3 of them (2 under warranty) and now I have little faith in their durability. I am not an expert on the ELofty style DD’s, however, I recall that ESK8Supply sells a 58kv version of those drives for a pretty good price. They claim that they are an upgraded version of the ELofty drives with stronger axles and more secure cans. If you are looking for a direct replacement that may be a good way to go. I have read a few positive posts ab their drives. Good luck and I hope you get your board back on the road soon!

It probably has a couple of these strands in parallel and even if it fully sliced it would maybe still go. It’s not sliced though and if u squeeze it back between the teeth snd glue it there should be ok. Use a multimeter or the Vesc tool
And make sure it’s not shorting.use high high heat epoxy

Only riding, not fixing. Billy too lame/lazy for that. I did replace one motor on my eLofty set after I rammed it into a tree root, though.

I want to cut up my inboard hubs, shrink the hanger material so the hubs sit closer to the kingpin. Then I’ll have room on the axle to mate some kegel adapters to the hub external face to mount a reasonable urethane wheel (bonus, hub can breathe without being covered in urethane sleeves)

then I have something like a quality direct drive if I don’t f’ them up in the process.

Check out the Madhubs thread when you get a chance. Pretty much how @rey8801 made his killer DDs.

Yeh I have seen some of the picturs are gone
I should see if I can find them back to keep info’s available.

I don’t know how many of your mad hubs are out in the wild, but there’s a good chance your direct drives are the most reliable ones to have ever existed

To answer your question. 16 plus mine. Ahah I thought the same but never said it. :blush:Too little number to actually know it.

Are there going to be more of these in the wild? 58kV in DKP configuration please!
