Correction, SOCKS and PPTP are both used as tunneling protocol (aka vpn). But you knew what I meant. I don’t know about specific applications (my job only goes as far as designing protocols like SOCKS). Both PPTP and SOCKS are used as a VPN protocol, used as a backbone for an VPN application. It’s not hard to detect it being used, as they both send magic bytes.
In the end it all depends on the level of competence of the sysadmins, and how much they want to block it. If they really want to they can block you out to a reasonably degree. Just throw shit at the wall, and see what might stick.
