XL BULLY - 4WD(Belts) JKESC(Radium) 18S8P BAK65E (x2) Mega Range Touring Board

I don’t think i can set ‘amps’ as such on the jkesc, i am curious to know if i can implement a power differential across front and back.

The remote does have an icon for 2wd/4wd, so I imagine there is some amount of tweaking I can do.

Still a long way off any of that though. Now that I have this hardware I can start thinking about the esc enclosure though and i just found a tracking website that works with the number from Lorentz that shows the wheels were scanned in Melbourne this afternoon!

After seeing the Radium race setups over the weekend, I very much like the idea of getting mounts cut out of stainless steel, so I’ll be able to start tinkering with mount design too.

I also REALLY liked the sound of the gears that Radium were using on the race setups, so there is a slight potential for me to deviate from the original belt plan… but that is just a pondering for now.

 the best !!!

Impatience got the better of me and i bit the bullet on the BAK65E.

Ordered through Vapcell, should be here in about 3 weeks!

300 cells incoming, $2773 AUD/$1904 USD shipped.

Board will hold an 18s8p in the enclosure and an identically built battery will live in the trailer. If there is any unforeseen catastrophic damage to the board battery, i’ll be able to replace it with the trailer pack.

Looking at the graph provided by the gracious @Battery_Mooch, i would expect to be using maybe 5-10a per cell on average so that should land me somewhere around 5.2Ah per cell down to 3v. So real world pack estimate at 16p would be 83.2Ah.

Nominal voltage for the BAK65E is noted as 3.5v per cell, so 18s nominal would be 63v.

83.2Ah x 63v = 5241.6Wh so I think it’s reasonable to say i can realistically expect upwards of 5kWh from the dual battery setup!

Extremely difficult at this point to speculate what kind of range that would equate to, I’m just gonna let real world testing determine that!

Running total - $8502 AUD / $5952 USD

This build is potentially the worst or the best financial decision of my life  but i’m balls deep now, just gotta commit to the vision!

Looks like they stock the BAK 65E A03 version.

Pajda is up to about 340 cycles on the 65E A03 with 0.5C charge rest 10 minutes and 20 amp discharge rest 20 minutes.

Other cells he compares it on same graph are the:

Linkdata 65P and 60P

Reliance RH60 and RS60

Appreciate that! Although i’m not sure I want to see the results given how much i’ve just spent

20 amps discharge has the 65E approaching its max temperature(70C), so the results you might not like are not so applicable when max discharge is half of that, and not taken down to 2.5v., and perhaps not cvharged upto 4.2 at 0.5C, or 26 amps in your case.

The Linkdata 65P stays bout 13C cooler at 20 amps, and likely a factor in why it looks better on Padja’s chart.

I don’t think you’ll regret the 65E

Yeah i may be pushing it closer to that 20a when just using the board battery but I really can’t see that as being a true continuous consumption rate, likely much lower given the way i tend to ride these days.

I very much doubt i will regret the cell choice but it’s definitely easy to fall into a rabbit hole of buyer’s remorse

Have you ordered from them before? Do you consider them to be a reliable/safe cell source?

Asking for a friend

I have ordered from them before and i did receive the cells, however I have not used said cells or tested them in any way.

I’m not willing to vouch for them personally, always a gamble buying cells from China IMO.

I ordered P42A’s from them in 2020, no issues, every cell arrived with identical voltage. Still using the pack I built with them today. At the time they were *4.70USD per cell, only downside being they were old 2018 stock.

They finally arrived! Axle space for days!

There’s just enough axle space for me to run a pulley (or a gear!) with a bearing, which I was very much hoping for.

Now that i know i have that much room, I’m totally gonna ponder gears some more….

I’ll definitely need to extend the wheelbase, wheelbite will be real as it is, but now i have everything i need to start making moves on this build… except time

When gears may be hard to install: “belts are better bc they can be so easily replaced and they’re simpler and won’t lock up. Belts for life!”

When gears may be easy to install: "oooo lala I may upgrade to gears "

Taking the piss in general not you in particular AL:heart::heart:

Lol the shiny things are hard to look away from!

I did a lot more pondering last night and feel pretty confident it’ll still be belts :grin:

The gears on the radium race boards were just too damn cool, got me all worked up

Ok so i needed to blow the cobwebs off my laptop and do a bunch of updates and stupid shit, but i’m back on the CAD train.

I wanna make fully encased cell holders for this build, for no good reason really, even though there’s probably several good reasons not to

The pack will consist of full 8p groups up and down each side for 16s8p and then the final 2 groups are gonna have to be split across all 8 segments for the full 18s8p, 144 cells.

If you were properly insane, you could fit 156 cells in there, 12s13p anyone?

Everyone knows that all the best batteries are 12s13p

It was one of my very first battery builds, Madness housed a 12s13p sanyo pack… i’ll find a photo cos i loved that pack..

Back in the days of stacked nickel strips!

Madness was such a cool build.. i learned a lot from that one

I’ve got a 12s13p P42A pack in mistfall at the moment, and it’s a beast! I can’t kill it in less than 50mi no matter how hard I’m riding or what terrain. Been seriously eyeing some of these new 6Ah+ cells for a rebuild though…

That sanyo pack used to get me close to 100km and i never really found all that weight on top to be a problem. If anything, it made the board easier to turn cos the weight of it helped the board tip over… i imagine a big underslung battery might do the opposite :grimacing:
