(Van)Life after esk8…

The one you’ve marked where it comes down from the van is an overflow for if the main drain to the greywater gets blocked somehow. It was also acting as the only breather for the tank/drain, i was getting airlocked because the air out and water in were using the same pipe.

Now that overflow goes straight down and the T going across to the tank is the breather and it works great. I can close the overflow inside the van and attach a hose to the bottom and that will let me flush the greywater tank with fresh water

Not much done on the van this week but I have hit a milestone and broken through a major procrastination wall. With the insulation finally complete, I now need to move on to the thing i’ve been dreading even more… covering it.

The plan all along has been to install stretch carpet over all of the insulated panels. I’ve been dreading it, as it requires cutting everything neatly to shape and applying spray adhesive to both the carpet and the panels.
I also bought a bunch of knockoff tesa tape to tape edges and joins if necessary…

I cut one bit of carpet and contemplated putting it on for all of about 30 seconds before I knew that this approach was not going to happen. I listed the carpet and spray adhesive on marketplace and pondered what it would be like to just apply tesa tape to the entirety of the inside….

Turns out the tesa tape wasn’t too bad to install, although i have serious doubts about any sort of longevity, i don’t trust that the adhesive is going to hold up to the temperature swings inside the van… i wasted 3 rolls of tape on the sliding door, although its not exactly a waste because it taught me that this was not the way either…

In despair, I whined to the telegram community about my shortcomings and @ShutterShock suggested that i might use adhesive felt… i looked it up and found that the local hardware had this product in stock, so I went and got enough of that to do one of the back doors.

It has zero stretch whatsoever, but the price is reasonable, the rolls are a good size to work with and the backing paper is gridded so it makes cutting it to size hassle free. Most importantly, it sticks like shit to a blanket, doesn’t want to lift at all, even when stuck around complex corners and it’s really nice and thin, so it makes seams barely noticeable.

I got most of one of the back doors done before running out of daylight. But i got enough done to know that this is definitely the way to proceed with the rest of the van, i just hope i can sell the carpet and spray adhesive to at least make some of that cost back, that shit wasn’t cheap. But whatever. Even if i can’t sell it, the adhesive felt is still the answer.

So that was the procrastination wall. I did NOT want to do the carpeting and i have been only making baby steps with everything leading up to it as a result. But now with a much more feasible approach in hand, i feel rejuvenated.

I would like to build the final cabinets before felting the entire inside, but that is also going to require some procrastination busting :joy: thats for next weekend…

Fuck me $33 a can for that adhesive? Can i ask why you didn’t go with a HVLP spray gun and a can of yellow contact adhesive? If you need a hand with cabinets let me know, its my day job

Didn’t think about it really. Tins are easy. Give me convenience or give me death mentality.

Appreciate the offer, but i’ll be good with the cabinets, just as soon as i pull my finger out and just do it :joy:

Wow…. No updates since May  i really did hibernate through winter!!

I have basically done two fifths of fuck all in the last 5 months… let me go back through my photos real quick and see exactly how little progress has been made

Have done a fair bit more felting and run wiring for lights in the mid section. The whole ceiling is felted now but still got all of the pockets to go. I’ve decided to felt everything before finishing the cabinets cos it lets me procrastinate on the cabinets for longer

This is definitely a big one for quality of life, i didn’t realise how much I needed this until it was in.. installed a shelf behind my sink cabinet and then designed and printed a housing for my water pump and humidifier switches.

I still need to implement some kind of rack on the shelf to hold things in place while driving, but i love that little shelf so much.

Fly screens!! Coming into warmer weather and i’m going to want to have my doors open at night time, need to keep the bugs out! I also installed fly screens inside my roof vents at some stage over the last 5 months, so now I should be reasonably bug resistant

But yeah.. not much has happened here. I’m at a point where i’ve become pretty complacent with it all and have just been droning on through winter. The warmer weather definitely seems to be bringing some motivation though and I really am starting to get sick of living in my brother’s driveway.

The upshot is that the time I haven’t been spending on my van, I have pretty much been spending with my daughter, so for that I am pretty thankful. It will be super cool to get the damn thing done though so that we can go on some proper adventures!

Not a whole lot of progress but i’m still chipping away at the felt and I’m beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel with that at least…

I think once the felt is complete i’m going to try and get the van insured as it will look somewhat complete by that stage and with the weather getting nicer i’m going a little stir crazy being stuck in the driveway.

I’ll still need to do a few more cabinets before it will be ‘complete’, but I feel like i can chip away at those and getting out of the driveway will likely be a catalyst for further motivation.

I made a little rack for my shelf so shit doesn’t fly around while i’m driving. I’ll need to design some little dividers to help keep everything still/located, but I’m reasonably happy with how it’s turned out.

I know this post is from ages ago, but did you consider reusable desiccant for controlling humidity? I know next to nothing about van life, but desiccant is how a lot of spacecraft do it. Very power and space efficient.

Yeah i’ve tried the reusable desiccant bags just as a method to decrease condensation on the windscreen.

They definitely work, but the problem with them is ‘recharging’ them

They need to be recharged in the microwave for like 10mins each at least once a week. It’s cumbersome.

I haven’t been paying much attention to the humidity data lately, but i’ve been running the desiccant dehumidifier in there for a day every month or so and that is well and truly enough to put my mind at ease.
