Making this thread to talk gears. Mod 1, mod 1.5 , mod whatever!
Let’s keep this thread limited to spur gears tho. Aka the round type. No worm gear talk. No bevel chatter.
Also this is not the place to debate whether gear drives are the way to go. This thread is for people who have already joined the dark side.

I’m starting to consider switching all my drives to use a d shaft 8mm interface. This would require me to grind a flat spot on the motor shaft. My theory is that this would be easier than broaching a keyway using hand tools and a bench vise. I tried that and broke a lot of broaches at ~$20ea.
I’ve always personally used 67t or 78t SRB spur gears but since Tito made the 67t of mod 1.5, I shall be going that way with my future builds. I prefer the gear ratios that 67t provides a lot more.
I already posted this in another thread, but I can mention it here as well. In my opinion, the Linnpower gear drive is the best. Here’s a photo after 5,000 km—it still looks completely new! Hardly any signs of wear.
You could get some half height keys made. Half height in order to fill in the keyway spot and essentially make it into a D shaft. Grinding the shaft makes it weaker. Actual D shaft would be better but I swear were on keyway as standard because of enertion lol.
36 Nm isn’t much either. It would be interesting to see how it performs with, say, twice the torque. A gearbox running in oil should last at least 10,000-15,000 km, otherwise something is wrong with the design.
I was thinking about laying a high speed bit in the keyway or sanding off the first few threads of the grub screw. For now i crank down the grubs with a pointed end and that works ok.
