👾 Space Invader - Venom's 4th Build

That is exactly what our sweet little moonbug did for me. I am not sharing them publicly but he’s a real one for sure.

Good call going with Shenzen 3d Innovate. You can also ask them to harden the gears after they are tapped. I just sent a similar request. That company is awesome.

Oh nice. I was looking at hardening maraging steel and it says it wants an Argon tank so out of my realm.

I haven’t had any of the sets I’m running hardened and they are running great, but the fact that they do this is recent knowledge for me so will be doing it from now on. In3dtec.com is another site similar to Craftcloud. We selected hardening on my friends gears but didn’t have them tapped and are unable to tap them ourselves. Our local machine shop doesn’t seem too confident either. All that to say, the hardening is definitely noticeable.

Yeah it really wants a Carbide spiral tap and those are pricey

That and there’s still a chance of breaking the tap. Moving forward I’m having all of the M300 parts tapped by the manufacturer.

We’ll see if the weight reduction on v2 changes the pitch at all

Hey I get not sharing his original files, but is there any reason not to share the V2 that you designed? I don’t need them but they might help someone else.

Yeah once I verify my version works well I’ll post it up for sure. Idk anyone still running moon drives but it’s always good to have an option

V2 has arrived! They are much lighter… coming in at 226 grams this time around.

$175.30 total with shipping

$20 for tapping

$21 for import duties

So $108.15 per gear all in

I did notice some imperfections this time around to consider. The hollowed out areas around the threaded standoffs are varying in thickness at the tips. I’m not overly worried but worth noting.

Bearing seat is still too tight to hand press in so in the - 80 C freezer it goes

Freezing at that temperature actually solidified the grease :grimacing:

It made a ton of frozen droplets on the outer surface of the bearing as well. It went in but when it equilibrated, the bearing was rolling crunchy.

So back on the lathe it goes to get that rough finish cleaned up. Took off just a hair (less than a hair to be technical) and we’re golden

No rattle, just a bit of pressure to seat correctly. Should be back rolling in no time. My deadline is still a few weeks out:

Can we get some close-up shots of the tooth surface quality? I’m still trying to decide how small I can make the teeth on my gear designs and still have them printed with enough resolution to work right lol

Bed face looks to have a bit more texture to it.

Hmmm so I threw these on our Rockwell tester and am getting 26 HRC. That’s pretty soft honestly so we’ll see how these hold up. I do not believe I have the capability to heat treat these further.

I wonder how much of that is just due to the porous surface finish? Idk much about hardness testing, but I’d imagine that could play a role depending on the scale/depth of the porosity

Yes you are correct. I was getting 18 hrc originally. I stoned down the faces to sit flush and it got up to 26. I think I could squeeze a few more out of I stoned it a bit more.

Way harder than POM still :joy:

Started cleaning off the gear lids and thought “why bother?” as I’m going to be sending these straight into the woods ASAP. Only got to spin the wheels up on the bench but the sound profile was not far off from my POM gears surprisingly. We will see how the first ride goes after work. Weather looks perfect :face_with_spiral_eyes:

First ride in and nothing broke so that’s good. Took it slow for a while to break things in but got it up to 35mph by the end of the ride. Did some grass riding but no woods. Will need to continue testing but so far so good!
