Today I’m building a tiny board for one of Luca’s buddies.
I had all the stuff laying around… except for the VX4 Pro… that I’m stealing from myself for now.
I’m using the little Tan Tien board I had for Luca before the Rayne.
I batted around between bkb 180mm trucks and 220mm…
180 had to be top mounted.. which is not cool. It was too high.
The 220s can go low…
The 220 meant I could use the longer little motors instead of 6354s…
It’s way lighter and kind of a cool look.
I had to hobble up mounts.
Mega throwback with the bolted wheel pulleys.
these are the really nice later design Dicky Ho ones.
It’s a little 12S battery. And I’m breaking out old Flipsky Dual 4.20 plus ESC…
The VX4 Pro will be a nice touch to keep an eye on the battery and have different speed modes.
I actually broke out the PC to update firmware on these…

Slowly but surely the little board came together and it turned out so awesome!!!
All the electronics played well together.
It takes me a couple of extra steps on the VX4 Pro to get it to actually move the throttle… like I have to go into the menu and calibrate the trigger and change the Vesc type… I am unsure of the exact sequence to follow so it’s a little frustrating… but it is working fine now.
I wanted to use the nicer remote to have the battery showing. And to be able to change speed modes… and it’s tiny and easy for a little person to hold…
I had not settled on enclosures… and I thought about 3d printing some…
Once upon a time I had fit a Unity in that enclosure. the Flipsky 4.20 Dual Plus fit ok…kinda crammed. I did not use the bottom plate for the box…
A few holes through the deck and a little butyl here and there and we were good to go!!!
Just needed to clean and grip…which took some doing…
I do this 4 piece thing often because it is just easy.
I am super happy of how it turned out for this little deck!!!
The handle was a last minute addition, but it is so great on here. Really practical for picking it up.
But awesome bonus is that it stands up now.
So good.
I expect to give it to the kid later on today!!!

Dangit it all.
I just had to walk home in the heat because electric skateboards are pretty much useless without a remote….
I decided to go on a lunch break ride even though it feels like 107 degrees.
The board of choice was the Dinghy because of its huge excitement factor due to it’s tiny size…
So off we went.
And not too far away from home the remote is spazzing a little bit.
It an old mini remote…
I turned it off and could not turn it back on. I suspect bad batteries.
I had actually thought about bringing extra batteries.
I did not think of trying to use the app as a remote until I was really close to my house..
I did try and it did not work on this set up…
So yeah.
Remote drama… I have a bunch of VX4 Pros on the way …
I am going to have to open so many boards….

I decided to stock up on Pucks after watching you deal with all your issues.
Did you say there was a reason you didn’t like the Pucks? All of mine are the V2 versions, so I just want to make sure you don’t know something I don’t.

Well.
I never jumped on the bandwagon back in the day because I like triggers…
In retrospect I feel silly fighting it and using hobbled up rc remotes for so long…
I don’t love the shape of it with either. But have not tried different shells.
But the current deal breaker is the possibility of it making a board ghost is the remote battery dies.
Total deal breaker for me.
I have seen boards ghost 3 times… 2 esk8s and my onewheel.
Nobody got hurt thank goodness… but I could have possibly killed someone…
Todays issue with my crappy mini remote was not a battery… but the shitty switch I put on there to replace super shitty switch it came with… sucks.
So my take on all this is.
Diy is cool. Go on and slap stuff together.
Diy inside remotes is not cool…
I dealt with that risk and sketchiness for so long…

The Benny Mobile is awesome.
The little bro hung out last night and rode it home.
He is pretty tentative still. But I really think having a throttle and brakes makes skateboarding more approachable.
I am still so stoked on how cute it turned out…
Seeing Luca riding with buddies is one of the coolest things ever.
Makes the time and parts soooo worth it.

The sketchiest thing about the vx4 pro to me is the remote lock. If you start downhill and forget to unlock it, no brakes. And you can’t lock or unlock the remote while the board is rolling. Rare situation but it’s happened a couple times. They need a firmware update that let’s you disable it.

I just got back from an 8 mile ride and I was just thinking I’m getting a little bit more used to thumb wheels…
Or at least I spent less time thinking about it on this ride…
So my VX4PRO vibrated several times on this Ride. the screen may even flash a message…
Is that brief disconnections?
It is normal?
It did not seem to impact the riding at all… I would not have noticed if it did not vibrate.

Screen lock is enabled when you turn the remote on. It’s the thing where you have to tap the menu button twice in order to use the remote.
Mine vibrates randomly too, but has never resulted in a disconnect. It only happens with my Stormcore 2.0 boards, never with the Solos. What ESC are you using?

My VX4 pro vibrates notifying low battery I believe around 3 V per cell. I think it’s connected to the S count you use in remote settings.

That is not an issue for me…
But I start 99.9 percent of my rides on flat.

I had high battery. I do want to go plug the remote in…
I’m saying 3 V per board battery cell in series it vibrates. If your board was charged maybe it was micro disconnects? I dunno

I had my first big scary lapse in trigger direction with the VX4 Pro…
I was out on a family ride on the Rad Lac. Rolling down a pretty good hill.
I just wanted to slow down a little… but went the wrong way on the thumb wheel…
Accelerating was scary and I realized what was happening and corrected it….
It was in a situation that was manageable to recover…
And it still sucked…
I wonder how long until the thumb wheel becomes second nature.
Because all the triggers have got to go…
Just before our family ride Luca had grabbed his DKP board to ride.
He was tooling around in front of the house and the freaking board ghosted.
Out of nowhere.
He had just ridden it home a couple hours back.
Turn out I had 2 Mini Remote failures in two days.
And today was the worst possible case scenario of the fucking throttle staying on.
You could turn the Mini on and off and it would still be at full throttle…
Fuck a Duck.

I had a second wrong way remote moment on the way home.
About the same…
Cruising down a hill. Wanted to slow down.
Pushed forward instead of backwards.
Both times today were so unpleasant…
Have you considered just… committing to that? If it’s what your brain wants to do, maybe don’t fight it. Should be simple enough to program in your vesc.

I actually had that thought for the first time today…
It may work just flipping the vx4 into reverse.
I am not sure if I can achieve it the same way on the loaded kit.. but probably…
