Mounting of electronics question.

I am on my first build and debating to either mount electronics (battery & ESC) to the deck or enclosure. what are the pros and cons to both? I know (or think I know) the best way to secure to enclosure, what are some ideas and best way to secure to the deck?

I always preferred mounting to the deck. Now with my 12s batteries I prefer to have them in the enclosure with some space between the battery and deck to allow the deck to flex a bit. I used M4 threaded insert in the deck along with M4 cap head screws and washers to secure my enclosures. You can also drill right through and use a button head or countersunk screw and a nut. Depends on the resources you have and how clean of a look you want.

I also use some closed cell weather stripping between the deck and enclosure it’s helps keep dirt and “some” moisture out and helps a bit with fatigue on the plastic enclosure if your deck is flexy.

Thank you for the reply, I don’t have an issue with mounting the enclosure to the deck, I was wondering about mounting battery and ESC to the deck or securing them to the enclosure.

Ah right. Sorry about that. My favorite thing to use is 3m Dual Loc or industrial strength Velcro from Home Depot.

I second this stuff. Been using it on all my boards for a while now. Works awesome!

Are yall using Dual loc to secure parts to the deck or enclosure or will it work for both ways?

It’s usually better to secure it to the deck, since that takes the weight off the enclosure.

I’ve used it for both. I usually mount to deck if possible. Makes things easier for maintenance.

Don’t use an ABS enclosure, use a fiberglass one. Mount everything inside the enclosure, put a thin rubber lid on top sealed with butyl tape, have ZERO wires exiting the enclosure, then bolt it to the deck.

Water tight goodness, and easy to service as well.

Does not work with weak enclosures though, like ABS.

I didn’t realize how hard it would be to find an enclosure for my deck. The concave is strong, 1/2-3/4 in. gap on the sides from deck to enclosure. I did go with ABS as my option and I still have to modify some stuff to make it work.

Unfortunately this is exactly why it is recommended to pick board and enclosure first. It seems like such a simple task but so many of us have ran into that exact issue

What deck is it?

Its a blank deck I got off TGM, I like the foot pockets as that’s the kind of LB I push ride normally.

If you have a heat gun, you can mold the enclosure to the deck. Alternatively you can make your own enclosure with fiberglass or carbon and epoxy resin.

I do, but I took 1/2inx1/2in. wood square dowel rods, carved out the sides to an angle to fill the gap. I am now using them as a template to make them out of black nylon square rods, hopefully this works. If not I guess ill just get a razor scooter and call it a day.

Seen more cracked fiberglass than abs. .

Put that enclosure in your oven on 250 for a few minutes and get it pliable.

I thought the same thing about using a heat gun to form but it wont allow enough space to put in the battery I want, it would just hug the deck close enough to mess that up.
