Making gear drive parts because there wasn't any

I bought a pair of BN gear drives for a friend who’s upgrading from a belt drive from @nclayton, he was WAY too kind and gave me two pairs of the gearboxes and the adapter clamp. The only thing i can do with my years of knowledge and fuckery of making stuff is to… well try to make it.

Here’s what I have. The motor mount, the gearbox cover, and the adapter

Here’s what I need. The motor gear, the wheel gear, and the adapter for a wheel, most likely kegel.

I took measurements of the existing kegel adapter. It’s mostly a round shape with a slot for the 608 bearing to slip into. 5 holes drilled in the kegel pattern, and if i remember right they were pressed in with retaining compound. I would like to change that and maybe make mine with the ends threaded in instead, and use red loctite.

As for the gears, i found some gears on Taobao that are similarly sized, but will need some machining to get them down to dimension. Diameters are about the same, 24mm in OD for the motor gear, and 65mm for the wheel gear. They are 1.5 mod pitch however. I will post more when they are here. First I need to buy a chuck for my rotary table to machine the kegel adapter..

Godspeed @Linny !

If anyone can work magic with an incomplete set of parts, it’s you.

These aren’t as long as the stainless dowels BN used for the kegel pegs, but I used some on a pair of adapters I made and they worked nicely for kegel holes.

16mm long x 5.5mm OD with an M4 threaded end… so a bit more grab than just a dowel with retaining compound. @BenjaminF turned me on to these.

Nice, that gave me some leads and I looked around and found this. The OD is 6mm however, I can turn them down to 5.5mm.

very cool stuff I’m excited to see this come to fruition, I got some BN drives on my campus build and I’d really hate to see them go away if I break them.

Regarding the kegel pins maybe instead of press fit do threaded studs? iirc @AlexB might’ve been experimenting with some custom threaded pins that screw in rather than press fit into the wheel adapter. The only issue I’ve really seen never get addressed with these drives is the tendency of the pins to eventually come loose with no permanent fix.

edit: lol just noticed Alex already participated in the thread and mentioned the pins, that’s what I get for not reading the comments and just replying direct to the main post

Gears and 50mm round stock is here.

Wow the tooth pitch is huge. Sadly the motor gear has no keyway. Ill check with the shop and see if they can do a keyway if I order again

Got hold of the gears. Gonna start machining them down to thickness once im more free.

on the left is mod 1 pitch. On the right is mod 1.5 pitch

The mod 1.5 is a bit tight. Almost kissing the walls of the gearbox.

The mod 1 is perfect

What’s the plan for clamping/locating them in the mill/lathe?

Likely i will use my lathe to do it, I got a 4 jaw independent chuck so I will clamp it on the teeth side but use 2mm copper shims so the teeth do not get marred.

Impressive. This is motivational for me. Thanks for sharing.
