I expected that every VESC would mind his own business but they don’t.

As you can see in the video, when I start with few throttle, both motors start but only the right motor keeps on turning (way too fast) while the left falls back to zero. But if I apply some load on the right one, the left one starts turning again and correspondingly to the amount of load applied to the right, like a differential.

Redo the wizard, don’t touch erpm limits

The day before yesterday I started to convert the right standard 6355 into a hub motor similar to the left one. Until I finish turning/milling I can’t do the motor wizard. Hopefully next week I can see if it changes anything

I bought my first VESC a couple of weeks ago and I decided to go for the Maker-X mini foc plus. I was generally impressed with build quality, price and size. However, when I first plugged it in, it let the magic smoke out…

I checked multiple times before plugging the battery in that the polarity was correct and read the voltage with a voltmeter too (I used XT60 connectors everywhere so should be impossible to connect backwards anyways). When I plugged the battery in (2x 5s lipo in series) the connectors sparked and melted the solder on the input wires! I contacted Maker-X website but received no response so I tried to fix it myself. When I opened the aluminium casing I noticed the ā€˜charred’ look was only close to the input side and the 2 closest caps to the input wires litterally blew up.

I cleaned off the burned parts with isopropyl alcohol, removed the remains of the two caps and soldered some test wires to see if the thing would even light up. And it did. I am not used to see caps fail SC, but I suspect soldering the input wires so close to them might have introduced stresses in the ceramic and made them fail later when I plugged it in with 42V.

I have now tested it with a motor too (6374 SK8), and I can say I’m quite happy with the product, I just didn’t like the lack of communication with the vendor as soon as I had a problem. I contacted them before regarding other things and although not too quick they still replied, this time I didn’t hear anything from them.

Hi, I had the same thing in mine, I did a smoketest first tho and found that three caps were shorted.
I removed all the caps beause frankly I did not trust them. Replaced them with 100V rated ones.

Makerx response was something like; ā€œbut even 50Vdc caps dont fail until 2.5xrated voltageā€ā€¦
Not a rule I personally would use when designing :man_shrugging:

side note:the electrolytic cap on your wires seem to be implemented after I posted a picture of mine xD

Hey,
I noticed your posts on the mini foc thread before I even bought the controller. I just wanted to try it quickly at home and didn’t think too much about testing it before connecting it straight to my batteries. I think it’s a very worthwhile mod changing those caps what size did you use? both physical package and uF?
In my workplace we tend to select caps that are rated to at least 2x the voltage they’ll actually see. On the other thread I saw a crazy figure of 22uF for those tiny caps and I don’t think they exist in 50V rating.

Normaly I’d advice atleast 25% headroom on ceramics, similiar/bit more on electrolytics
Tantal 3.5x intended voltage

I used w/e I had around, can’t remember. Think some smaller 4.7uF 100V caps and one larger 15uF 100V ceramic which was quite huge.

Has anyone been able to use Metr CAN with their Mini FOC ESC?

My metr powers on, but says it cannot detect the ESC in the app. I tried supplying 5V from the PPM or hall/uart inputs, but that did not fix it. I tried swapping CAN L and CAN H wires. I also tried with another Mini FOC, and same results. Any idea @YUTW123 or @rpasichnyk ?

Using latest metr FW (5.60) and latest vesc FW (6.02)

Is it safe to update the firmware on this ESC?

The ESC is running ok-ish on 10S driving a geared hub-motor with settings 10A max, 200W max at 13k erpm in current control mode over UART. FET-temp has never seen above 45 degrees C.

Only problem is some spurious unintended motor-shutoffs for like 30seconds followed by normal operation. Reasons unknown. It is difficult to diagnose for me but I since found my firmware is outdated. One step in hunting down the cause could be to update the firmware.

VESC-tool identifies it as ā€œFW v5.01, Hw 60ā€. The macos version of VESC-tool only comes with firmwares v5.00 and v5.01.

The archive on github offers v5.03-60 or the v6.06-60.

Is it safe to update? Which firmware version to use, v5.03 or v6.06? Are both compatible with this VESC? Any known caveats?

yes. The macosX VESC-tool complained about too high firmware version incompatibility for firmware v6.06. v6.05 was ok to install but I could not get the motor to run without stuttering.

Downgraded to v5.03, loaded old working motor&app settings from v5.01, re-detected FOC settings (quite different form v5.01 detection) and motor is running without stuttering.

Time will tell if this resolves the spurious motor-shutoffs

I had no issues updating to newest firmware via windows vesc tool. running smoothly in a dual setup since spring.

I have since installed, detected and configured 6.05 successfully.
