General Questions Thread 2025

Why not just use hubs that take a 22mm bearing? There’s little difference between those hubs and evolve hubs for example right? I assume you’d pick up some evolve hubs for next to nothing.

Might be different where you are, but they’re pretty much the only boards sold here and due to planned obsolencance the hubs tend to persist like plastic bottles in the ocean.

Electric skateboards are weird.

I’m on a lunch break ride on the Hummie.

12s3p BKB Zenith and Flipsky 6354 motors and a Z-mote.

I’m in the middle of traffic waiting on the light behind a car.

A good 5 miles into my ride.

And the board stops responding.

And it won’t really roll…

What in the Vesc Hole could possibly be going on.

I turned it off and on and it seems normal.

Before turning it off the remote was not responding. And both motors had a lot of resistance.

What would you do?

Throw the board in the river?!!

I am not even sure where to beggin with trouble shooting.

A while back this board turned off on me randomly too.

99% zmote related :face_with_tongue:

Yall ever seen a spanner this big?
10mm socket for size reference

I’m about to power this thing up I’m scared

I would always type “faults” into both vesc channels separately before powering off if something weird happened. It’s case sensitive too. Whenever it affects both motors, and there’s no fault - I assume it’s input related.

I expect there would be no fault in this instance, and it’s likely associated with the remote, and by the sounds of it the vesc was likely receiving an input for braking. Do you have smart reverse enabled? If you do, and it was stuck providing braking, then something even weirder than a dodgy remote / receiver is going on.

It’s hard trusting a board after weird stuff, but I find a couple beers helps.

Stand back and use a big stick for the “on” button!

This week I had a touch controller go faulty while working on a pneumatic circuit of an edge bander. Despite doing nothing wrong, it’s hard to convince the client of this - especially when it’s $6k for a new one ex Germany.

Luckily, this was in my home city so I was fortunate enough to take it home and repair a voltage regulator. Had a few less lucky examples in the last couple months. Machines, and their owners can be stressful things!

Yeah.

I always forget to check for faults.

And I don’t have a data logger.

So I never know…

I do have smart reverse on. And it May very well have been in use when it went weird.

If there was resistance on the motors, cause by a braking input, and the motors hadn’t started reversing then it doesn’t really make sense.

I don’t have a data logger either. I assume they’d get expensive putting one on each board, doesn’t seems a priority for my own type of usage at least, and something else to go wrong.

What motor controller are you using? If it had brakes stuck on, and not going into reverse, it sounds controller related.

Basically the same way I feel…

Bkb Zenith on 6.05

And an older trigger Z-mote.

I’m at least going to flash new firmware and run motor detection again.

I have been meaning to change the remote on here for a GT2B anyways. I just keep putting it off because of all the butyl tape under the enclosure.

So I may also change the remote.

It was such a weird thing for it to stop where it did.

I’m thankful it was not something that took me down

I have MK1 coming in a few weeks, could someone suggest some kind of wrap type protection for the bottom?

Also, who of our own guys on the forum are making truck top plates?

I use 1.5 and 1.75” ones mounting pole lights. I love busting them out even when im alone they give me a smile. Id have twice as much work space if i didn’t love tools so much lol

Rebuild, break it down and swap in a new remote and receiver first imho. Two warnings is one too many. Might not be the receiver or remote getting old but it’s the weak link. Give all the connections another dab of glue or shrink and go ride :face_blowing_a_kiss:

I do recall seeing someone using PTFE adhesive sheets on their MK1 enclosure.

Personally I wouldn’t bother. The enclosure sections are almost concave so most of the scratches are going to be along the bottom sides. It’s just cosmetic since it’s both flexible and tough as nails at the same time. Mine was ran over by a Subaru right down the center . Only damage was a couple scuffs from bottoming out. This board is low with 8 inch tires . If you go down to 7” or slicks , like I did, you’re going to get scrapes regardless. Just ride this piss out of it and collect the battle scars along the way is my take.

Stormcore? Sounds like

Ha. Interesting. I remember reading about that back when…

It a bkb Zenith in there.

But it is entirely possible I was right above one of those stop light coil things. When both motors were giving resistance.

After that day I had installed 6.06 and ran detection and it looked good.

I went on a lunch break ride. All good.

On the way home I stopped to look at some baby geese for like a minute.

Before that it was all normal.

When I tried to roll away one of the motors was behaving weird. Cogging and would not spin up .

I ran motor detection and one motor came up unsensored.

I flipped it to hfi and made the next 1.5 miles home ok.

So at this point I suspect damaged wires or loose wires…

I am going to open it up and redo connections and put in a new remote like @Pecos suggested.

Heyhey,

I was wondering if there are DIY-builders here offering their service to build boards, best case in Germany or Europe?

→Reason is I got no time to deep dive into DIY building, cus it would take me hundreds of hours to gain the knowledge, but also I am not too satisfied with the western shops and their price range (too expensive), neither with the Chinese-OEMs and their quality.

Another route I was considering:

Are there any pre-selected DIY-kits / shopping lists available in here that use premium quality parts but for different price ranges and applications? Because I could see myself assembling a parts list. I would have sufficent tools for that from torque wrenches to multimeters - but I dont want to build the battery as I lack specialized tools like the welding machine.

If anyone has some idea that might fit, feel free to share - because the only alternative for me would be to use a regular pre-build board.

Thanks ahead!

Just buy Radium.

You should mention your general budget and desired type of board.

A lot of the current Chinese production boards are a significantly better value than going DIY these days.

As far as European premium I think Flux Motion continues to have a solid offering.

It’s my favorite type of set up.
