GB Remote Lite - Open Source VESC remote

Maytech V2/V3 split trigger would be another good one as well for research. The ergonomics and feel on that are great (fat triggers, nice tension) especially compared to the goofy VX3 and it’s pointlessly giant screen (at least for eskate I guess but maybe not esurf?), which I’ve also tried.

Maytech V3 is what I’m currently using but the signal isn’t the greatest and the battery meter specs in the OS only go up to 18S. I do like that you can use PPM for throttle and UART for telemetry simultaneously which I don’t think the VX3 can do.

The Evolve Phaze remote feels really good too - has an even smaller form factor than the Maytech. Totally closed off though - maybe a guts PCB hijack would be possible.

I’d love a better VESC split trigger out there, as someone who just got into eskate I tried all the different control schemes and split trigger is the one that made the most sense to me.

Not sure how big is the crowd that likes dual trigger the best. Maybe a poll would help GB prioritize what to work on next/how many to make, etc. That said, I would personally buy 'em + backups.

i’m already working on a split trigger version, only issue is finding a place for an ocd without getting it to be too bulky

Nice - excited to see how this develops. Both the Phaze and and the tiny Maytech screen have been good sizes for me, I rarely look at them while I’m going - mostly for battery & odometer data.

Might be too much of an ask but… if you are able to fit the screen on the remote it would be dope…

Depending on if the rider is right handed or left… you can place the screen on the specific side.

I’m right handed so placing the screen on the left side of the shell for example

Side screen has me thinking of how I’ve used the side of my remote as a slide puck inadvertently during crashes several times - but that may just be a me problem since that’s how it is on the wheel version here and some other remotes.

Screens on remotes seem to add more things that can go wrong and more ways for rain to get inside.

which remote is this one?

I have mixed feelings about displays on the remote… certainly looks nicer but agree may add to the complexity of this one-man gig for not too many practical benefits unless we also consider added functionalities like speed mode or light control. Tbh I would be more than happy with just 5 LEDs for checking remote battery level. An added bonus if it can report board battery level as well. I almost never check speed on the remote, eyes on the road.
If a screen has to be added, on the top like evolve’s, flipsky’s and may tech’s is the way to go. I would hate for any developer to have to keep stocks of right handed and left handed versions.
Kman, the developer of Z.mote, told me that the screened dual trigger remote was in development but struggled to get the last bit of hardware figured out, a local supplier for glass screen protector that matched the dimensions and tolerance he required. Haven’t heard back from him in forever, and don’t know the status of this project. He has many competing interests, after all. And that’s why I am especially excited about GB’s effort to bring us some DUAL TRIGGERs baby!!!

I agree about the battery meters being the most useful. I do like screens for setting things up & trigger calibration/connection feedback too but another exciting aspect of this remote if I understand correctly is that it’s open source so if a screen does get put out of commission it’s still possible to set up the parameters just through the firmware which is great.

I would expect the updated zmote to be coming real soon, kman has hardware locked down, including the screen and housing. He is/was working on finalizing adaptive FHSS and integrating FHSS modes in the app.

Two amazing projects from this community. I’ll be a proud owner of both. :100:

Guess not everyone is a fan of a screen… got it lol…

Ive used the puck and now zmote without one so it really isnt necessary.

I was aware that Kman was working on upgrades but like others have said… have not spoken to him in a while. Still think the GB remote looks cool and i am excited to get one to try.

The screen is awesome imo. I think most people want telemetry data on the remote

If it lets rain inside and causes a failure, it’s not worth it. Especially when you can get data like that on your phone, with a bigger and nicer screen.

I’m going to have to disagree with you there. I rarely ever ride in the rain/wet unless I absolutely have to, but I glance at my remote several times per ride for quick metrics like speed, temps, battery level, odo, etc. Having to pull out my phone during a ride for that would be a hassle and in some cases straight up dangerous. Everyone has their own opinion, and that’s fair, but imo a screen is nearly a must have on a remote these days.

That’s probably because you use your machine as a toy and not a tool. There are many different types of machines for many different purposes.

But in any case, your phone usually has a better screen and user interface for all the telemetry.

I do hear you, and some folks may not feel comfortable using their phone while riding, and that’s okay.

A screen on a remote is very, very far from a “must-have” feature on a remote. I would say the primary “must-have” feature on a remote is not failing to control the vehicle, no matter the weather, posture, radio environment, or use-case.

Absolutely agree on the last sentence. For me a screen is near the top of the list though. With that said, I’d probably eat shit in the rain due to rider error long before water would make it’s way through a screen cutout and cause any kind of issue lol.

Also, I would think the thumb wheel/trigger/control mechanism of whatever kind would be the biggest issue for water ingress

I use remotes in thunderstorms all the time. Like, as recently as a couple days ago. Not going to call off work because it’s raining.
