Future esk8 power transmission?

Surely it could be disabled for regen

Moving the motors off the wheels might make anything for traction control more difficult, but how skateboarding differs way more than cars is how we can apply weight to different areas of our wheels, cars can’t do this. I’d also argue, moving the motors off the trucks not only lightens up the trucks giving you more control over them, but it can make it easier to go more narrow. Downhill took from slalom and realized they can take better lines with narrow trucks after skaters got more skilled at being stable. Narrow trucks scrub less when turning since we don’t have Ackerman steering.

If we can find a way to reliably get a motor/s from the board to the wheels, that would be great. A single big motor or several small ones I think is worth pursuing, but of course it’s no easy feat. @MoeStooge has had some ideas on this in the past, it would be cool to see it implemented in the future. He’s always got cool ideas on the back burner until the time comes.

Sounds like you need a drive shaft and differential

I brained on this for a while but I currently can’t make the time to build a custom differential (though with laser sintered metal gears that are starting to show up here it might be a lot easier now) and there’s a huge gap between the biggest off the shelf RC car differential and the smallest, say, riding lawnmower differential; which is the space we need to be in.

So it’s possible but it’s a big project. I’d love it since it would fit right into my spring steel suspension project and I could finally get the AWD on the Sand Runner that I’ve always wanted without so many motors and ESC’s and so much weight.

– update –

a little time with AI brought up the Traxxas Sledge differential, which might just have strong enough components to not kill you immediately. And parts don’t look like big money. The idea would be to get a couple of used ones off eBay and then upgrade as necessary. The first thing I’d change is the weird u-joint thingy on the output shafts. Try to get a real U-joint. Then somehow magically attach it without resorting to welding.

If anyone goes down this path please post!

Search for bevel gears and just use a u joint socket i would actually make the whole drive shaft out of 1/2ā€ drive socket extensions
