I never said you can’t brake on a full pack. The whole safety over cell life thing is just that. How much do you value the battery life over your own braking performance. With 12s however, voltage spikes when braking on a full or almost full battery can kill your DRV.

Now I understand that at least 1 time it was probably me who killed my Evolve Gtr Carbon: went down for about 1-2 km a pretty steep hill fully charged. Went back. On the way back uphill motors smoking and board dead.

I think that’s mostly because regen is very inefficient and most of the energy goes as heat in motors and controller. Braking on a full pack is not likely to bust the motors, you would have had the same result with a dead battery (don’t take my word for it though. Only evolve knows what fuckery is in their controllers)

How does this look?
I’m really trying to go ride this beast tonight!

So I’m not going to ride this thing until I can get more clarity on my settings. It’s a 12s8p 30q pack with a discharge bypassed BMS. I’d like to be 100% on the settings so I don’t destroy anything. I just want to make sure I have my battery settings correct for output and regen.

Anyone?

There are lots of tutorials out there, like this one: http://esk8.news/how-to-ackmaniac-esc-tool/
this: https://www.vesc-project.com/documentation
or this one: https://www.eskatetech.com/blogs/news/vesc-tutorial
There’s another one I’ve seen on here, or maybe the old forum, that did a lot more details of each step (maybe written by mmaner?) but I couldn’t find it.
I usually just use the wizard in Vesc tool, but at the most basic level you 1: run a proper motor detection (either BLDC or FOC), apply the detected values, and write motor config 2: set your battery max based off your battery accurately so you arent pushing more than your battery can handle. Write motor config. 3: map the remotes pulsewidth max, min, and center. Write app config

Thanks for all the help guys! I had a full send last night. This board is a beast!

Are these settings in the VESC tool the total value or per VESC? If it’s per VESC is it too aggressive and will it damage my pack?

As far as I know this should be per VESC; please see https://vesc-project.com/node/938 for an introduction.
