Fess' 1st build thread. Tayto on hummie hubs

So, my goal has been to replace my last mile board, a BBv2 which I gave away. Then having learned more, build my second build, a custom prototipo to improve my current commuter a DSS50+.

This thread will be about that last mile board.

Goals for last mile board.

  • practice building a board.
  • practice building a battery.
  • Easy to carry on and off the train, or in general carry around any remote destination.
  • eurothane.
  • > 362wh

parts so far:

  • hummie hubs,
  • tayto deck.
  • big ben enclosure.
  • dual focbox, unity, or dual escape. .

So I started down this path. Doing easy parts of purchasing bits that might be a fit and doing a lot of reading. it’s been months. I’m going pretty slow. I’ve been hesitant to start a build thread.

Decided to do a tayto. picked up a used one. [ learned BKB kit would have been a decent start too, somewhere after getting my own tayto used. which is a bkb anyhow. ]

I’ve already made one mistake, I purchased a really nice used drive train. 3dservisas mini drive gear, motors, trucks, superfly 107s. then realized when it all got here that it’s way to heavy for my last mile board.

So then I started thinking I want hub motors as this is a last mile board I want to be able to cary around easy so more compact == better. got hyped on the hummie hubs article. and picked up an unused set second hand. they arrived and are possibly bigger and heavier than I realized as well, but I think it looks cool so I’m going for this.

I’ll make a separate reply for my battery thoughts. I do want to build my own for the learnings. and to improve build my skills for the second board, who’s goal requires custom battery.

9kg (>20lbs), and 10mile range is my last mile board… I’m watching this to see where it goes…

Those hummies look awesome can’t wait to see the finished product

All I see is focbox, unity, escapes…

Switched to “watching” because I plan to do something similar and yet shittier soon.

can you tell I got hyped on some other article…

I do have to understand the canbus power at same time stuff, that they suffer from, idk if there’s a fix to be done to it or not. but the power is already connected together so I think that doges the issue.

So, I’m probably complicating my battery thoughts.

  • same batteries as second build?
  • practice “staggered stack” offset enclosure for second build?
  • don’t yet know the KV of these hummie hubs.

My second board plans get roped into this. First because I kinda want to see if I can just order all of the same battery. but second if i end up having to battery pack larger 21700 cells into the prototipo case to meet my goal. I might want to practice that technique in this build.

For the second board the custom prototipo I want to pack more wh in and more amps (so no 50T ) 12s5p 21700s will probably be the easiest fit. but those combos might not meet the power increase goal of that project of 25% - 50% > stock. 12s6p 21700 cells will meet the goals. but any 6p 20mm or above will require some funky battery jiggery. with partial stack staggers. I’m thinking crazy things like custom staggered 3d printed holders to form a partial double stack.

this would give you an idea of me trying to figure out what heights I can limit things to with various batteries.
.

in the bigben tayto enclosure it’s 10 18650s wide. 9 20700s. or 8 and not quite 1 more. 21700s.

this is my mockup with 10 18650s, and 9 21700s. you can see how the 21700s have to bump one up, ie stagger stack to fit. This makes 12s3p in a 9x4 stagger stack of 21700s an interesting target for practice for the second build if I really want to go after this stagger stack idea.

Last, I don’t know if 12s or 10s is appropriate yet for the hummie hubs until I figure out what the KV of them is. Seller didn’t know. I think they can be anywhere from 65kv to 85kv. 65kv 10s is probably too slow but 85kv 12s is probably too fast. I think i want to hit 20-24mph in usual travel but would like to hit 28mph on it for bragging rights if it’s not too small a wheel base for it.

but if it’s 10s, that may separate my second board plans from my first and i’ll just get two kinds of batteries.

Also I have no idea what BMS to use. I want to do charge only. I want it to take up very little space. ideally I could use the same one in both first and second builds.

Most people go for a small daly bms which is pretty tiny and really good

Most people go for a bestech bms which is proven and solid. Let’s keep information dispersion researched.

I have a Daly and bestech. Both work great :man_shrugging:t3:

Daly is quite a bit cheaper no??

And also yeah sorry forgot to mention bestech which I think a lot of people use the d140.

@natch
Gonna look not too dissimilar to this.
I did 10s3p for this but ended up using 10s2p 30T.
I think 10s is fine for this build. (For me)

Are the new hummies out ?

Simplicity :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Nooooo, not yet.

what KV are your hubs?

I should be able to find out but @hummieee would know off the top of his head.

Youd think I’d know off the top of my head. It’s a very low kv even hitting 30mph on 12s. I think it’s like 68-75. Somewhere in there.

So 10s you’d be looking at 25mph?
