I dont think the issue is really debris getting in, steel on steel already has pretty significant friction to cause issues without lubrication. The issue is more so that unless you lubricate every ride or even multiple times a ride, the gears will essentially operate dry and you have significantly increased wear.
On my mod1.5 78/12 open gear setup there’s also a huge difference in max output torque between dry gears vs freshly lubed ones. Like output torque barely increased when I swapped from 22T (0.4G) to 12T dry (0.5G). Then I lubed the 12T and got a huge increase in torque (0.8G). I could still gain maybe another 10% of output torque just by moving up to 17/whatever gives the same ratio, but that’s due to the bad contact angles and significant slip that gears with <17T suffer from.
i was running my open gears on no grease for most of last season and the noise was the only noticeable difference for me. didn’t see accelerated or uneven wear, just more noise. (your results may vary)
yup, gds pinions have been great for me and they survive the wear and tear of racing pretty well. also cheaper than the losi pinions.
I do notice a very significant difference in peak torque between dry and lubed, but that’s at 12T driving a 10" wheel. I don’t think there was a significant difference when I used to run 22T on 6".
I have dreams of hitting the road for a week at a time and clocking 500 miles give or take. Anyone doing this kind of thing actively or from the past? If you go on YouTube there’s plenty of documented trips from bikers doing long trips. I have seen smaller trips documented on esk8. I did watch the “828” film. Off the top of my head I know of “Mike in the Woods” who’s done esk8 trips on YouTube.
So far I’ve only gone out for overnight excursions with two charge stops in a day. I suppose I’ll slowly expand my trips to become multiple days.
We have two Flux Motion boards with an additional 2.1 kWh battery and the plan is 200–300 km per day. Right now we are solving the spacing problem — where to put everything like the tent and other gear.
